For the benefit of New Yorkers, who have lcvolopod a great fondness' for the mc -called Turkish and Egyptiun cig. urettiM, the statu, department hm m;idc an investigation of the tobacco industries of the cast. 1'ftieticnlly u!i ol the Turkish tobacco comes from SiimHomi. in the district, of Trebi roud. ' Large quantities of the Trebizond tobacro are sold by the Turkish grower to Egypt, whero it is nsort to brighten the tobarmo used from other pints of Turkey. The Trebi xnml tobacco, according to the Unit ed States consular agents, is weak, 1ms very little nronirt nnd large, very light colored leaves which do not Bijou Theatre 1 BAILIFF MAKES A SEIZURE -This is a scream. 2 FARMER JONES GOES TO MARKET You'll laugh and laugh and laugh, 3 ILLUSTRATED SONG. 4 THE STOLEN LEGACY I )on't miss seeing this. 5 Don't die a-laiighing, but come and we TAKING HOME THE EGGS. 6 CARTER & OLIVER in a comedy playlet, "TAMING A HUSBAND" Moving Pictures and Illustrated Songs Entire Change of Program Wednesday Nights Admission 10c-20c BEDSPREAD SPECIALS. $1.25 seller to close 98c $1.50 seller to close $1.13 $1.50 seller to close $1.08 $3.00 kind to close $2.19 .50 seller to close $2.98 keep well. The Sumsoun and Ilafra tobaccos are stronger, have mor? iiroinii, dut nit bite the tongue an! Imvo small dark leaves. Tho most aromatic sorts are what are called Mardcn nd Dere, tho latter meaning valley. 't'he country whore the best Turk ish tobacco is grown is a low moun tainous region bordering the south shore of the Itlaek sea. The tobacco is grown, like the grapes, on (ho slopes of the hills, and the climate is always humid. A (dear sky and bright sun are extremely ruro. The methods of tobacco curtiire aro prim itive, and much is left to chance an ! future; no systematic rotation of crops is practised, no scientific, fer tilising nnd there is little cultivation. In Trebizond the average yield about 800 pounds of Inhnecii per ncre. Tho leaves are put on strings, each quality bv itself, nnd hung on lles in tho open air. Then, when tlrvq, they arc put into n sweat house. A food deal of the Turkish tobacco is made up in Hungary for the Amer ican cigarette trade. In one factory in Finnic, Hungary, in the Inst your, 371,000,000 cigarettes wore manu factured. Homo of tho tobacco came from Brazil, Java and Sumatra. All French Lawns and Batistes reduced. German statis ticians point in alarm to the decreas ing birth rate, most plainly observ ed in Berlin, and n pronuncinment-j against "race suicide" such as ex l'resident Roosevelt hurled at the American people, is expected frou Euioror William. In England the discovery of Ger many's danger will come as a great relief, for one of the main arguments of the agitators during the war scare in England has been to point out thot 'he German housewife is providing seven children to the English wife's four. As far as Berlin is concerned, there can. be no doubt that the situa tion is serious. Every year shows a decreasing birth rate. In 1908 the total fell to 5l,(f36, from 53,89!) th previous yenr. In .1898 about 29 children were born for every thousand of popula tion, whereas in 1908 the rate had decreased to 24. In 1878 tho birth rate was over'44 to the thousand. Another startling fact, just brought to light is that in 1876 every fourth married woman bore n child; in 1908 every ninth. In ten years the illegitimate births have increased out of nil proportion to .the natural increase of popula tion.
