AND GETS GOOD RESULTS!
VALK, (Jr., July 13. Owing to the
backward iichh of the Spring, the al
falfa crop will be comparatively light
this year in Malheur county. How
ever, the M-ed crop bids fair to ba
pxwdingly good. This is a new
feat urc that has been introduced into
the f anning within the last two yeara,
and one that is gaining ground every
year. Heretofore the alfalfa hay
crop ha been the major crop in tliij
part of Oregon, but it haw been found
that the soil is betcr adapted to the
raining of the need, and that it is
more profitable to cut only one
early crop and then allow the alfalfa
to seed.
The farmers in this section realize
from $50 to $100 an acre from the
seed, and it is not uncommon for the
yield to bring $120 an acre. This is
exclusive of the first hay crop.

The British academy once had print-

for presentation to some foreigners

honored with the sift. Professor Airy,
tho astronomer royal, was requested
to make a selection of the names. A
few days after lie had sent In his list
he was Informed ly tlie secretary of
tbo admiralty that "my lords" were
struck by the number of unknown
names included mid that they wished j
to make an Inquiry on the subject.
Airy asked the secretary for some
specifications as to the names referred
to.
"Well, as au example," said the sec
retary, "here is the name of Profegsor
XI. F. Gauss of Gottlngen. Who Is be?"
"Gauss is one of the greatest mathe
maticians of the age and stands among
the two or three most eminent masters
in physical astronomy now living.
Who else do you wish to know about?"
"No one else. That will do," replied
the secretary.
What Man Owe to Bird.
"It should be realized." said a nat
uralist, "that without birds to bold in
check the insects vegetable life soon
would cense and lift) for man would
become imimssible upon the earth.
Birds are nature's check to the amaz
ing power of Insects to increase. If
insect life were allowed free course it
would soon overpower plant life, and
therefore animal life. Including that of
man. would be impossible. This is an
astounding conclusion, but It Is the
conclusion of science. If tbe birds
were gone very soon the leaves would
disappear from the trees, and tbe limbs
would be festooned with the webs of
caterpillars or with masses of their
nests. These would move from tree to
tree, increasing by the million as they
advanced. In the course of a few
seasons there would be no trees. In
the fields other species of insects would
destroy tbe grass and the grain and
all vegetable life, and tbe ground
would be as if a sea of devouring
mouths had passed over it." .
Laziness.
"Laziness is responsible for too

The Dragon Tree.
The dragon tree of Tenerife Is per
haps the strangest vegetable in the
world. It is thought to be a kind of
giant asparagus, whose dead branches
serve as a support for the crowns.
New roots as tbey come into being
encircle and conceal the original stem,
which is far away inside, and the
roots which become detached from the
stem may be seen banging withered In
the upper tree. The trunk is generally
hollow, and in tbe case of an old tree
which was destroyed in 18G7 there
was a spacious chamber which had
served the natives as a temple tor gen
erations. The tree was forty-eight
feet around and ulncty-flve feet high
and Is supposed to have been origi
nally watered with dragon's blood,
which is the name now given to the
sap. This is a regular article of commerce.

saloons by the Salvation Army las
sies in Spokane. Adjutant Dean
states that many of the supporters
of the army and many of the active
members have been compluining
against this work for some time,
holding that the omney should se
cured in some other way.
The fact that women of the army
are the ones who will sell the paper
is responsible for this action. The
officers and supoprtera of the army
ure not in favor of having women
enter these places to sell the publi
