FOLLOWING LANE "S FOOTSTEPS.
To the chagrin and disappointment of many of his
supporters, Joseph Simon, Portland's new mayor, an
nounces a continuance of the closed town policy inaugu
rated by Mayor Lane. There will be no restricted district,
no gambling will be permitted and saloons will be strin
gently regulated- The Oregonian, which fought every
move made by Lane and ridiculed his every effort, ap
plauds Simon's announcement. Mr. Simon's way has been
made easier by Lane's efforts.
Harry fLarne, all things" considered, made a good mayor
for Portland, and left the city in far better "shape than
he found it. He had the opposition of a corrupt city coun
cil, was constantly abused and misrepresented by two of
the three newspapers of Portland, and his vetoes of fran
chise grabs and steals saved the taxpayers many a dollar
and would have saved more had the council not frequently
overridden them..
Mr. Simon will have the support of the newspapers,
of the council and other city, officials and in following
Lane's footsteps ought to lie able to accomplish far more.
If he doesn't, he will have only himself to blame.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 13.
President Taft and President Por
firio Diaz of Mexico will meet in
Sou Francisco during the Portola
ceclbration if the plans proposed by
the local celebration committee are
realized. The announcement in the
itinerary for Taft's western trip that
he would meet the Mexican execu
tive at Kl Paso suggested to the com
mittee the possibility of arranging
that the meeting occur here. Com
munications and official invitations
will be sent to President Diaz at once.

timated by the eDpartment.of Agri
culture that on June 1, 1909, there
was in farmers' hands 195,000 bush
els of wheat in Oregon ; 215,000 bush
els in Washington, and 130,000 bush
els in Idaho ; total 540,000 bushels.
