There are avalanches of different kinds, but when the term "avalanche" Is used It hi generally supposed to op ply to falls of great bodies of snow or Ice, says Mr. Kdward Wbyniper In the Ixmde.ii Strand Magazine. One of the first occasions of this kind which at tracted attention took place In last, upon Mont Blanc, and It Is commonly called the Ilamel accident. Dr. Hamel. a Russian, get out on Aug. 18 to go up Mont Il'.anc, accompanied by two bng llshmcn and eight guides. TheJ had ascended to a height of more than 14.000 feet, with five guides in front, who were cutting or making steps, when all at once the snow above them gave way, and the members of the party were carried down a thousand feet or mure over the slopes up which they had tolled. Snow again broke nwav above and more or less covered them. Some of them struggled out, but three of the leading guides were hurled Into n crevasse mid burled un der an Immense mass of snow. Tin bodies of these men reappeared ut tin foot taf the glacier thirty years afterward. i : (I I :! elilli a tic Her Answer. COOK, Proprietor. Two Bits of Wood. Importance cannot be reduced to 0 matter of size. The success of a piece of work may depend on a tiny detail. Such Is the case In regard to that marvel of construction, the violin. Rev. II. R. Hnwcis In his "My Musical Life" tells of the care nnd labor ex pended on two little pieces of wood which go to make up the perfect whole. The sound bar Is a strip of pine wood running obliquely under the left foot of the bridge. A slight mis take in Its position, looseness or In equality or roughness of (inlsh will produce that hollow, teeth on edge growl called "wolf." It takes great cunning and a life of practical study to know how long and how llip-k the sound bar ir.i: I be and exactly v. !i..iv to place It in each Instrument. The sound post is a little pine prop, like a short bit of cedar peucl!. II is the soul of (lie v'mlin. and through It pours all vibrations. lays and weeks are spent In adjusting t lie tiny sound post. Its position exhausts the patience of the maker and makes the Joy or the misery of the player. I was lying en the floor of an old country log house one summer day near a big open fireplace when I heard a peculiar, frightened squeak. I got up to see what lookisl like a huge mouse moving at n very rapid walk across the room. When 1 got a closer look 1 saw that It was a mother mouse mov ing her whole family. At least I hope there was none left behind, for very soon a small snake, but large o:inu!i lo put Into a panic I he mother of four less than half grown children, came through the empty fireplace and after the little fugitive. The mother mouse had two In tier uiouth. and fastened to either side of her, apparently holding on witli i heir mouths nnd for "dent life," were the other two. I killed the snake nnd watched the moving family disappear through a hole In the corner. I do not know wh"thcr they returned after awhile or whether the father mouse put up a "To Lot" sign and Joined them In a foreign country, but I do know that I saved a happy fam ily.
