Klamath Falls Party Tells of Won
derful Haturat Beauty of
Klamath Caves.

turned recently from the famous
Modoc lava beds, having had, as
they say, a most interesting trip. The
drive from there to the Ice Caves, a
point about seven miles south of
where General Canby was killed by
the Modocs, a distance of forty-seven
miles, was made in a day and a half,
and the return trip in one day. The
party encamped two nights at Mer
rill Butte, a cinder cone ..ear the
Bear's Paw ice cave. Ice water is
lifted 60 feet from the floor of the
cave by a force pump at the Merrill
horse camp.
From this point excursions were
made on horseback to various points
of interest in a region abounding in
cnves and craters where extinct vol
canoes are numerous on every hand.
Several new caves were discovered
by the party, one of which, some two
hundred feet in length, fifty in width
and with a level ceiling forty feet
above the floor, would afford a
ready made auditorium where a lec
turer might theorize on the geolog
ical history of this most interesting
region. The most important discov
ery made by the party, however, was
of a two-story cave, which is indeed
one of the world's marvels. A hole
was found some ten feet in width in
the bottom of a large cave. A lan
tern was lowered on a rope until it
was evident that there was another
floor with a surrounding cavity some
twenty-five or thirty feet below. A
small pine tree was cut, divested of
its limbs and brought into the cave.
This was lowered until it touched the
-lower floor, and by it the party de
scended to a great corridor, thirty or
forty feet wide, extending apparently
parallel with the corridor above in
both directions from the point of de
scent. The corridor is not less than
fifty feet in extent and is obstructed
at the ends by loose mnterial fallen
from above. No thermometer was at
hand to determine the temperature,
but it is cool enough to contrast
greatly with the degree above ground
and icicles five or six foot in length
depend from tho ceiling in many
places. One can walk on level . ice
floors for long distances. The ice
may be of great depth at places. The
party had no means at hand nor time
to test its depth. At one place the
ice floor descends and presents the
appearance of a river suddenly
frozen in its fall to a lower level. The
entire party of thirteen persons,
proved a lucky number in this case,
for all descended the pine tree to
this frigid chamber and bravely tra
versed its rugged floor without ac
cident. Captain 0. C. Applegate, from
whom we have received an account
of this new discovery, tells tu' that
his observations from the Black Cin
der cone in the vicinity t)f these ice
caves, makes it evident that the cave
system, of which those mentioned
form a part, extends from Merrill
Butte to the great blnck ledge, llic

Jack's strmghoid, a distance of
about fear miles, and that a double
cy.ve was perhaps ciMiiiniiing in for
mer ages between these points. Many
caves will no doubt be explored in
the future in this region, not only
historic on account of the warlike
Moilncs having made their last stand
against the army of the United States
here, but because it presents extraor
dinary scenic interest. It will surely
become one nf the greatest attrac
tions in all the west, and will prove
the Mecca of thousands and thou
sands of tourists ui the years to
come.
