for ihe manufacture of air saltpetre,
the manure of (he future for our food
crops.
The lecture was announced for
mid-day but Ihe large demonstration
lliealre of the Central Technical Col
lege was so crowded with delegates
long before thai time that Professor
Armstrong, of Ihe Central Technical
College, who was chairman, n-ked
I'rofessor licrnlhscn to begin bis' lec
lurc at 1 1 :.".
Importance of Nitrates
Professor P.crnlbsen went to the
heart of bis subject at once. Of all
Ihe things which agriculturists sup
ply to the ground to stimulate Ihe
jrowrii of crops what are called ni
trates are the most important. When
nitrogen is onimitted the yield of oats
falls )H per cent. The world's store
of snhpetre, it has been estimated, at
the present rate of consumption can
not last longer Ihau from twenty-one
lo forty-two years. Sir William
Crookes in 1S1KI said lhat Ihe extrac
tion of n i t ! !'!! from Ihe uir "is one
of the greatest discoveries awaiting
the ingenuity of chemists." It was
this discovery lhat I'rofessor ftern
thseu was describing.
Pour-fifths of the air we brealhe
is composed of nitrogen, but Ihe
problem is to make il combine with
oxygen to fonn what is called nitric
and nitrous oxides. This is brought
about by Ihe agency of great temper
atures. I'rofessor Hernthsen turned
to his apparatus, which two Oernian
mechanics and an engineer had erect
ed. It consisted of a long narrow tube,
with n copper spiral running up to it.
At the sides similar tubes carried
running waler lo cool the upper i-
neeiion or the spiral. Krom the top
f the lube ran an iron tube with a
stopcock, to cany away Ihe uilroiren
oxides. A current is sent through a
glas stiibc. and Hi,- compiv-scd air
which is sent in at Ihe same time
runic- ihe Hume up ihrouirh the

lo an assistant. The current was
switched on, another assistant made
a connection at the bottom of the
tube and iu a few seconds a brilliant
bluish flame was mounting up the
'lass lube. A I'cJw seconds Inter the
delegates saw the familiar brown
yellowish color of nitrous o.vide gas
appearing in the globes. The appeur
ance was the signal for prolonged
applause.
The current employed for demon
stration was at a pressure of oOlifl
volts, and nearly (i h.p. of electrical
energy was used. The gas obtained
is mixed with limestone, when cal
cium nitrate or "air saltpetre," is
formed. A slightly different method
gives calcium nil rale, which, being
richer in nitrogen, may, said the pro
fessor, become Ihe artificial manure
of the future.
I'rofessor Hernthsen hopes Unit
within a few years the annual out
put, of air saltpetre will reach 100.
000 tons.
