summated in this city for years ma
terialized Friday afternoon, when
Frank Waitc disposed of his, hold
ings in Ihe Siillierliu Lund & Water
company to- tile Luco Lund company.
The consideration is said to have,
been approximately $:j."i0,000. The
purchasers nro said to ho among tho
largest colonization concerns in the
world, having operated oxtonsively
throughout the United Stales. K. L.
Meyers, state senator of Nebraska,
and M. C. Miller of Minneapolis rep
resented the company in the deal,
having "spent Ihe last two weeks in
this vicinity.
The land involved in Ihe trnnsnc
tion represents fil per cent of the
stuck in the Sutherlin Timid & Water
cnnipuny, thus giving the new buy
ers the controlling interest. The re
niainder of Ihe stock is divided be

TORTURED FOR MONEY
SHE DID NOT POSSESS
WlLKF.S-llARltF., June 8. Mrs.
Mary McDmle, an aged woman of
Kingston, near here, was tortured
this morning by robbers in the belief
that she had a large sum of money
hidden.
Mrs. Mcllade lives nloiio. and the
robbers evidently got into the house
about midnight. She assured them
that all Ihe money she had wns fiS
cents, nnd this she gave them. Then
the torture lipg.ui and lasted almost
a n hour. They twisted her fingers
and thumbs, breaking one of her
thumbs; pulled her tongue nnd toro
it partly off, pulled out her hair,
kicked and struck and pinched her,
ami finally left her unconscious.
Neighbors found her still uncon
scious this morning, nnd her condi
tion is now precarious. Stnte con
