Forestry is attracting wide atten tion nmong the schools of tho United States, Not only have many colleges and universities introduced courses and even professional schools of for estry, but elementary phases of the subject have been introduced into hundreds of the graded and high schools, and teachers Rive enthusi astic reports of the success which is nttending the new study. Public school teachers say that they have found in it n subject interesting to children, and one which furnishes much attractive, tangible material to work upon, developing the child's ob servation and being at once accepta ble to tho young mind, and most prac tical. The public schools of Washington, I). C, and of parts of Town arc in the vanguard of this movement. Ev ery graded school in Washington and a large numbor of tho rural schools of Pottawattamie county, Iowa, are now teaching tho elements of for estry. In Town the subject ir being tnught as a commercial course in connection with home geoirrnphy and agriculture, while in the Washington schools it is used in the nature study courses. The four upper grades of tho Washing ton schools are studying tho for est and this yenr all are following practically the same outline: noxt yenr this outline will be confined to the fifth grade, while the other grade will follow an outline ono step ad vanced, and so on until by the fourth yenr . a four-yenr course will bnve been introduced. As a preparation for this work, forestry has been taught in the normal school of tho District of Columbia for several years past, and when the young student teachers tnko up the actual work of fondling they are already familiar with the details of elementary forest study. Prominent among the other normal schools of the country to take up work of this kind are those of Cleveland, O. ; Rochester, y. Y., and .Toliet. Til. WASHINGTON, May 19. Attor ney Ooneral Wickerslmm toduy de cided that a national bank has a le gal right to insure its assets against loss. The opinion was rendered in response to a requost from tho sec retary of the treasury, who sent to the attorney general a form of policy tot bo issued by "an insurance com pany proposed to be organized." The attorney general approved the plan of insurance, but suggested some changes in tho form of policy. The demooratio platform a year ago recommonded n tax on national banks, nnd on such state banks as wishod'to come in, to ruise a guar anty fund to insure tho depositors of the banks. Mr. Taft opposed this plan in his campaign speeches, nnd when Oklahoma as n stnto put tho plan into oporation the then attor ney general decided that it could not ho npplied to national banks. Mr. Taft opposed it as a proposi tion to "tux tho honest und prudent banker to make up for the di.-honcsty and imprudence of other," that "the chief nnd, in tho end, probably tho only benefit would accrue to tho speculator who would be delighted to enter the banking business when it was certain that ho could enjoy any profit that would accrue, while tho risk would have to l.o assumed by his honest and herd- irking fellow." Tho form of irsu 'ance p'eposod now is voluntnrv, hut it is remnrkod that insi'iance by one bank will foroo all others in its territory to insure, making it in tho cud pinctica'iy com pulsory, i THUNDERBOLT PLAYS PRANKS WITH COTTAGE S1SSON.
