WHY 'GIRLS GO WRONG.
There has been a shocking exposure! of immorality
-among the very young of both sexes at Jacksonville this
week Before the juvenile court, presided over by Judge
Neil, girls in their early teens have shamelessly admitted
their depravity, implicating their youthtul companions.
As a result, there have been hasty weddings of those .too
young to face the responsibilities. of marriage, an exodus
of guilty youths to escape prosecution and .the consign
ment of girls to the corrective influence of aid societies.
This immorality among these children. blossoming into
maturity is not confined to one section of the county, but
has existed in several localities. The community is not
to blame but the home influences arc.

The precise nature of magnetism is not known. To

originated by Faraday is generally employed. Consider
ing it in this way a magnet may be said to pour out a sort
ot an invisible and powerful thud or effuvian from its
poles. This magnetic' force seems to come out of the north
force in ordinary.,magiicts flow in a circular route, it has
force in ordinar magnets flow in a circular route, it has
l)cen shown by experiments that they are always trying to
become straight lines. These lines of force dp not travel
through the air very easily, but iron and ateel form an
easy path for them. ..Therefore they will pass through
iron or steel in preference to the air.
The attraction or'," pull" of a magnet when it draws a
piece of iron or steel is caused bv the efforts of these lines
of force "in trying to shorten' themselves. To make a mag
net of a piece of iron all that is necessary is to make lines
of magnetic force pass thiough it. AVlien a current of elec
tricity is flowing along a wire the lines of magnetic force
circle about the wire. If this wire was .insulated and
wound many times around a bar of soft iron the lines of
magnetic force would penetrate the iron and make it a
powerful magnet. .
Not only can a current of electricity in motion cause
magnetism,' but theprocess can be easily reversed. Plac
ing the magnetism in motion will cause electrical pressure
in the insulated wire and result in a flow of current if a
properly connected circuit exists. If a wire is moved so as
to cut across the magnet lines of force, a perfectly definite
electrical pressure will be set up, depending upon the ve-
loeity of the movement, the length of the wire and the:
strength of the magnetic; field. If the ends of the wire!

that is needed is some mechanical contrivance by which
a good conductor can be moved in a magnetic field with

SOMETHING A HOl'T MAGXHTISM.
To fully understand electrical machinery it is neces
sary to know a little something about magnets and their
relation to electric currents.
Kvery child, almost, has played with a permanent mag
net, which is nothing more than a piece of steel, shaped
like a horseshoe, which has been given the property of
magnet ism either by rubbing it on another magnet or by
surrounding it with a coil of wire carrying an electric
current. When hard steel is magnetised it retains a large
portion of its magnetism indefinitely and is then known
as a permanent magnet. Soft iron can also be magnetised
very powerfully in the same way, but when the exciting
cause has been removed the magnetism vanishes. The
hardening of the iron seems to give the molecules of the
metal the power to retain the magnetism, but why this is
so no one can answer.
But the permanent and electro-magnets behave alike
in all respects. Both will attract and hold iron or steel.
