The pastor does not fear that the ten or twelve members of the local church will neglect his services for the church", but knows from experi ence of a year ago which way the1 crowd will go. The general merchants of the towii do not regard lhe coming of a circus with favor. Charles Schoch said re-i, cently in town board meeting: "When a ciscus comes to town, you might us well get behind your counter and open your safe, for your customers come aril borrow money to go to the show.'' The eight saloon keepers of the town are the only ones, it is said, who make anything out of a circus, (.'irons day is a harvest for them. Last year it is said that Montague could not keep out the circus on Sun day because it was not iucoqtorated. The congregation of the Methodist church at that time protested against Sunday exhibitions in the town, but the remonstrance was futile. Now the town is incorporated hut the circus shows on Sunday just the same. NEW AUTO ROAD ' l:r iSTTO BE BUILT Highway From Redding to Dunsmuir Will Soon Be Constructed. J. E. ENYART, President ! A pe tition is in circulation asking the supervisors to build a wagon road on the west side of the Sacramento from Elmore on the south to Antler, or Gregory on the north a distance of three miles. This would make an open highway along the river from Redding through Kennett to Dur.s i.ntir. Elmore is three miles north of Ken nett. The wagon road from the south ends at Elmoro. The old Oregon nnd t'nhifornia wagon road comes up on the east side of the river, crosses the Pit at Wyndham ferry (when there is a ferryboat there), passes through Knird, swings west to Antler, or Gregory, and then follows up the Saciameuto on the west side. With u road from Elmore to Antler the tegular traveled route would be up the west side of the Sacramento nil the way. . Automobile travel is becoming heavier every year, and if it should be made to pass through Kennett it would be u great advantage to the town. As it is now, with the Wynd hnni ferry out of commission, auto mobile parties have lo make a detour through Trinity ("enter and French Gulch to make (lie trip between Duns nuiir and Uedding. To avoid this (iO miles oul-nf-thc-wny (rip, automo biles are fie;uently shipped by rail from Redding to Dunsmuir. If the three-mile wagon road was built from Elmore to Antler this would be avoid, ed. ( The cost of building this road is j roughly estimated nt .t:ill00. The petition will be presented to the hoard of supervisors tomorrow. THE MEDFORD NATIONAL BANK CAPITAL $50,000 SURPLUS $10,000 Safety boxes for rent. A general We solicit your patronage.
