THE GOVEHSOirs VETOES.
Governor Chamberlain is busy smashing' the work of
the legislature with his veto ax. Some of the vetoes air
deserved. Jn others the governor oiinht to be overridden.
The bill restoring the delinquent tax list to publiea
tion should have heroine a law. Xo one know; imw wheth
er his property is on the delinquent list or not. and the
nrsent conditions', enable tax and title sharks to reap a
harvest by preying on the unwary property owner.
The bill compelling medical examination before issu
ance of marriage licenses was a common sense measure.
Doctors instead of preachers ought to do the marrying
to prevent the spread of disease and the birth of enfee
bled offspring with heredity taints, thus keeping the sins
of the father from the third generation. If, as the gov
eftior stated, "it was an insult to the men of Oregon,"
they ought to bo insulted, for a man that can't pass a phy
sical examination has no more right to a matrimonial
policy thairhc lias io an insurance policy.
The ''sfrriliz.il ion" bill is a measure endorsed by sci
entists anil the medical fraternity, and wherever tried
proven beneficial. It also fell the governor's ax.
Vetoing" the measure in salary bills for county officers
was a grandstand play, calculated to win the applause of
the niossbacks. As counties double and tbrible in popu
lation, the work of the officials increases in proportion,
and to keep them on the same par as u lieu the office was
a sinecure is absurd. First-class men in any line receive
good wages, ami a county school superintendent certainly
ought to get as much pay as a school teacher.

YOUNG TO POSTMASTER
IN SPITE OF FULTON
Under the caption "End of the I lie session" the
Grants Pass Observer, among other things, says of the
legislat ure just adjourned :
"The, session liuil liesl be ilescribetl us a tift enh intsc

ciles, bal there teas a hetifji mtijoiilil in lh honst . Tht
fete members of It iislal ire eapucil 1 ami common prmli nee
were not able hi si a the tttnti."
This is a sample of the defamatory rot that is going
the rounds of certain rabid partisan papers. I !y raising
the cry of boodle and scandal they hope to prejudice the
publie against the legislature. Rending a little further
in the Observer, the real reason for the outburst of venom
is disclosed in the following:
"This letjislatttri: that Hut alutsi tl ils trust teas the
sccoutl jirutluct of the primai a lair. Tin first product , the
legislature of WOT, was quite as slua'tl tint mil ipt'itc so
cottrateoitsli) 1 ct ra runtnut . "
liecause the members of the legislature stood by iheir
pledges, kept faith w itll the people and elerlrd the popular
choice United Stales senator, no infamy is too great o
heap upon them, and no accusation too foul lo hurl
at. them by the press of the discredited machine.
This legislature did not differ greatly from oilier leg
islalures. It was representative of the slate. There was
a lack of leadership apparent, but so is there among the
people of ( Iregon.
It. was not an extravagant legislature. The aumiinl
of . money actually appropriated was not much greater
than that appropriated by previous legislatures, a 1 0 1 llic
state's revenue.- arc larger 11. .v than ever lie fore. If the
legislature elTcil, il Wa 'oil T llf Side of economy, for II"

comprehend.
The session was untouched by stories of graft and not
smirched by scandal. In this respect, it compares wry fa
vorably with any legislature in ( Ircgou's histoty. The sen
atorial deadlocks, the "holdup" session, the eorruplioii
that tainted t he cut ire stale in the days of old are st ill fresh
in the public mind and in comparison the session just
closed is a decided relief.
The old order change! h. No plott ing on the part of pol
iticians, no falsehoods smeared broadcast hv newspapers,
will succeed in undermining the direct primarv law and
in restoring the regime which has passed away along with
the roses and thistles of vesterdav.
