WORK ON NEW BRIDGE
CARRIED AWAY SATURDAY
GRANTS X'ASS. Or., Jan. 20. The
river has been on n rampage for more
than two weeks and last Friday night
it reached its highest point and about
3 o'clock Saturday morning the only
two piers set in the new bridge nt the
foot of Sixth street wero toppled over
and carried down the river several han
dled yards below. These piers hud
been set in the middle of the river nnd
driven from J to 115 fiet In the bottom.
Heavy limbers had been placed on them
and it was supposed by the bridge build
or that the high water would not diH
turb them, but the Rogue river has a
powerful current aud at times It sweeps
everything before it. Tho old timer
informed the bridge contractors that
they might expect high water and there
was only one wny to escape its eonsc
fjuenses, and that was to finish the
bridge by the first of January, tho date
mentioned in tho contract. It. is said
thet loss in consequence of ;his mishap
