Kt'Eov. Charles Scanning, bishop of
Oregon, will arrive in this city this eve
l'inff and tomorrow will bold divine
services in St. Mnrk'j. Ho will be ac
coinpnnied by Bov. Mr. Van Waters,
who will held the. evening service.
Communion services will bo held at 8
A. m., and morning prayer at 11 a. m.
Evening prayer at 7:30 o'clock.
The bishop has issued his holiday
gieetings as follows:
The Bishop's Greeting.
"At this joyous sceason my heart goes
out in loving greeting to all our clergy
and Inity, to the faithful in active city
parish, to friends without the diocese,
to the patient and sometimes discour
aged workers in our distant missions to
ranchers fnr away who have no oppor
tnnitv to make-their Christmas commun
ions, to our auxiliary women, and the
worshipper with us, and also to those
baptized nnd confirmed members of our
Father 'b family who rarely, if ever,
'praise God in the congregation'; to
all may God give in abundance the
cheer and consolations of the Christmas
truth. How all thoughts of self, of our
successes and failures, of the indiffer
ence of friends of the unresponsiveness
of fellow workers, of false judgments
of our actions and misinterpretations of
our motives, take to themselves wings
and fly away, and our hearts glow with
' joy and love when we meditate on the
trrarvol of the Incarnation, on the great
winder of the lovo of God. The word
apart from Christ gives us no adequate
assurance that God is love although
Robert Browning has taught us to say
'Ho that created love, shall Ho not
level' But that God is loro it is that
our Lord guarantees.
Love Famishes Motive Power.
"It is this lovo which furnishes the
motive newer to carry out the object
of tho Incarnation expressed in the
command of Christ, 'As tho Father natn
sint me, oven so send I you.' The call
of the Incarnation to you and me is per
sonal and complete. We are asked to
invest ourselves. The motive, after all
which must move the church is not
nronortionate giving or systematic giv
ing, pleas for .money, various incite
ments to duty, br the crying needs of
tho heathen at homo or the heathen
abroad. It is the example and direct
command of the Incarnate Lord. The
'as' and the 'so' of that command are
equal. His coming into the world cost
Trim nnvertv. persecution, abgony and
crucifixion. He gripped the world by
renouncing it, and we must continue and
completo His work as His commissioned
ones, for Ho investB us with the same
program of renunciation, and tho same
promise of victory. I call upon you, dear
people, to invest yourselves, body and
soul, and mind in tho service of our
Incnrnate Master; then there will be
no "missionary problem," and no lack
of means for church support. Tho In
carnation of the Son of God is not a
the understanding. It is
Womparabily the greatest fact in tho
wholo history of our race uu .."
it imnnaes on us corresponding moral
duties, so that it is no exaggeration to
ay: . "
'Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering fnr too small,
Love, so amazing, so Divine,
Demands by soul, my life, my all.
"Affectionately, Your Bishop and
fellow servant in the Lord,
"CHARLES SCAODING
"Bishop of Oregon."

Sl'OKAXE, Wash., Dec. 20. Commer

memorial to tho tariff revision com
mittee and the Washington, Oregon, Ida

congress asking for tho removul of tar-
ff on coal. This means that a short
ton will bo 50 cents cheaper than at
present, thus saving thousands of dol
rs a year to manufacturing concerns.
steam plants, office and hotel buildings
and householders in districts depending
upon tho mines in British Columbia for
their fuel supply.
Mayor C. Herbert Moore said that the
mines in Washington nnd elsewhere in
tho northwest owned by the Northern
Pnrific and the Great Northern rail
roads do not produce much more than
enough to supply their own needs, add-
ng:
' Accordingly, for domestic nnd man
ufacturing purposes we get our supply
from Wyoming and British Columbia.
British C lumbia is near to us and tno
growth and development of its coal
mines would tend to our commercial
development and would build a new
ining soction in which we wouia snare
tho nrofits. I refer to the mines near
Fernia and olsowlfero to the north of
Montana and Idaho.
T understand that tho tariff re
vision committee is now considering
this problem; and that if the reduced
tariff is adopted it will bo in the nature
of a reciprocal measure with Canada.
Ontario gets most of its coal from Penn
sylvania and Ohio and the Canadian
dutv is about tho samo as ours. In
New England much ot tne coai comes
from New Brunswick. It seems to me
the change would work to the benefit
of both countries." .

SALEM BEER
SALEM is the most popular beer in Northern
Calif ornia and Southern Oregon. It is acknowl
edged to be the equal of the very best eastern
product. All beers are good, but some beers are
liked better than others. The proof for this as
sertion lies in drinking Salem beer. If you wish
to be convinced, ask for Salem beer and drink it.
