.WASHINGTON", Ui c. 1 2G. George
Dewey, admiral of tlio United Suites
nuvy mid famous, throughout till world
us tbo-hero of Manila liny, today reiuli
ed tlits 7 1 Kt milestone in his journey
through life.. Letters and telegrams of
congratulation are pouring in upon the
iignl sea fighter.
Mrs. Dewey lias been exhibiting to
liien.ls a little diary' begun by the ad
miral over ten years ago. In Ibis there
is his own in.-ou"t of the battle of Ma
nila Hay. It is as follow:
"Sunday, Ma 1 Reaehed Manila at
daylight 'and immediately engaged the
Ijpnnish ships and butteries lit Cavite.
llestroved eight, including the Iicina
Christina and the C'astilla, also oni' large
steam tr: -.import. Anchored at noon off
Manila."
Despite his extrtme age, Admiral
Dewey's general health remain-good,
and on his birthday he has taken- oc
cnsion to give some good advice to
young men "who would achieve lasting
health and happiness.
"Young men who want, to niumtum
good health to the end of a long life,"
he said, "should live out of doom oil
they can and take, plenty of exercise.
1 h'nvo practically liv?d out of doors nil
my life. For years when not at sea,
1 rode horsebacl:ovory day. Now I take
daily drives. 1 believe that President
Roosevelt's out-of-doors activity is the
chief reason for his ability to do as
much work. Such' exercise, for on ac
tive mentality, is r.s vital as eating
or sleeping. An activo life is the health
iest ono. Keep interested in lifo, meet
and b4 with people. A recluse hates
life; a mixer among men never."
Today the hero of Manila Bay is a
poor man. "But I cheerfully confess
that money is not everything in life,
he said. "Money doe 9 not gunrantoo
happiness or contentment. And I am
both happy and contented. If I could
live my lifo over again I should ask
only for good health and the same op
portunities to do thcVork I love best.
Men nnd women wo are blessed with
good health to carry on the work they
like best and are hnppy in the execu
tion of it enn hope for no more. Thnt is
..,..,..,.. Ami haimiaess lies in
ones work. But equally important for
a happy career is a nappy
nnd in this 1 am mosi umm-u
not ambitious for wealth, bubt I am
rich in other ways. That which has
brought me the most satisfying divi
dends is friendship. T love my friends
and, 1 hope, they lovo me."
