Medford litvivliaiit.s ri'imrt Hit biggest Christmas trade
in their history. There is not a store in the city whose
business is not greater today than it was a year ago, despite
increased competition. If present indications are ful
filled, next year will see Medford make its most rapid
growth and the latent resources of the country developed
to a greater extent than ever before.
Medford is passing through the hardest trial in the
life of any growing community, emerging from the coun
try town into the city, shedding its village ways for those

and the thousand and one improvements necessarv to build
tlie city. All this makes heavy expenditure, and all the
revenue necessary must lie raised in ways that will work as
little hardship upon the coninumitv as possible.
.'For this reason, a business administration of the city
is demanded, and a man ot ripe experience and proven
ability, who will administer the city's affairs satisfacto
rily, is needed as mayor and such a man is Judge Canon,
tlie Jiusmenss Alan's and taxpayers' candidate.

Putnam will survive the1 courts, officers
and grand juries as applied in Jackson
and reap the reward that always comet
to the patient. A great political party
perished because it attempted to muzzle
free speech.
Tlio Tribune does not believe that the Medford eity
charter should be altered. It is unique in that it enables
the city to control its liquor business without dictation
troni rival communities, and adjacent farms. It is for
hmntc in having such a charter and is the envy of the
entire state. To surrender the principle of home gov
ernment would be the height of absurdity. '
Two petitions wore presented the couneil, one by the
liquor interests to submit the question of wet or dry an
nually to the voters. If carried, it will keep alive the con
stant agitation and friction between the two elements and
prevent united effort for the upbuilding of a real eity.
The other petition was submitted by tjie prohibitionists
and provides for making tho charter conform to local op
tion law of the state, thus enabling Ashland to vote Med
ford dry. ,
Both proposed amendments should be defeated.

SLAPS SHEARER ON WRIST.
(Grants Pass Courier.)
J. If. Ahif is of the opinion that
lhe Medford police are a mighty lax set.
A couple of weeks ago he had a man
dressing poultry and after the work
whs finished the man walked off with
a fine, large turkey, and the last seen
of him he boarded a train for Medford.
Mr. Ahif notified the""polioe at that
plaeo and the latter seemed to take his
notification as a joko, and apparently
mado no attempt to arrest the thief.

An attraction of more than ordinary
merit will hold the boards at the Med
ford Theater next Monday night, De
cember 28, when Manager Hazelrigg
will offer H. E. Pierce & Co. 'a typical
western comedy drama "In Wyoming"
with a cast of well known players, in
cluding Cecil Kirke, Frank Patton, Nel
son Leavitt, Herbert Rawlinson, Denn
Selah, Burt Crowoll Harriot Dunsmoro,
Anna Gardiner, Marie Bonsall, and oth
ers. ' in Wyoming" is a strong, wen
written drama of western life, without
the usual gun play and melodramatic
feature. Every character and scene in
the pieco brent hos the life of the great
western cattle country. The dramatic
incident of the. capture of tho cattle
'thief, Stave Gordon, in the fourth act,
nnd the marvelonsly realistic western
suna-t, add an element of realism to
the play which has rarely been equaled
in tb history of the American stage.

Novels in dramatized form am rap
idly fweoming the most popular plays
of the theatrical seasons. The- records
for large business in nearly every thea
ter are now held by plays that have
been dramatized from a popular novel.
The latest play of this typo is "Jano
Eyre," a dramatization of Cbnrlotte
Bronte's famous- book of the same title,
"Jane- Eyre"" in possibly one of the
most popular and widely read novels of
the present generation; in a recent arti
cle in the New York World is stated
that "Jvnv EyH"r was one of tfrc ten
greatest lovo stories over written. This,
of course Sounds like a strong state

Like must no wis of this class-, the
scenes nrr laid in England. The dramatic
version in said to follow the. original
manuscript very closely, making a play
that is intelligent and consistent aw well
as amusing. There is nbout the play a
quaint rare charm that fascinates. At
