THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT.
Christinas is the one day in the year when Christianized
humanity is supposed to practice the' precepts taught by
Christ, and when the Christmas spirit, "good will to man,
rcigift over the civilized portion of the. earth.
The giving of gifts symbolizes the forget fulness of self
and the thoughtful ness for others that for such a brief
period succeeds the reign of selfishness and vanity in the
human heart. That many have turned the pretty custom
of giving presents in to selfish channels whereby only the
value of the gift instead of the thought that prompted it
in the giver is considered, does not detract from the real
purpose of the custom.
Doing unto others as you would be done by is the
Christmas spirit the true Christian spirit and neither
the massive cathedral nor lavishness of wealth symbolize
the worship of Clod as does man's thoughtfulness for his
fellow man. So, for this brief period, we who pretend to
follow in the footsteps of the lowly Nazarene permit his
commands to supplant our native greed one day out of
the .soli m the year.
If we knew that the last stroke should pound for us
tonight and we had a few minutes to prepare for eternity
would those minutes be spent in carrying out the pur
poses that animal'iHir daily life in piling up wealth, in
gratifying greodf njjJPln the thousand small vanities that
animate our liliputian existence upon this beautiful sphere
Cod has given us as our home or would these fast fleet
ing final moments be spent in doing what we could for
others t Would not the elimpsos of friends show faces
dead to the heart and the world we were about to leave
forever assume a beauty hitherto unseen, and the every
clay vanity fair spirit give way to the evergreen Christmas
spirit 1
And when we shall have slipped over the threshold
of the present into eternal day, will those few days when
the Christmas spirit actuated our measly and despicable
little hearts, count enough to offset the long days and
.-jbti'olHug into years, of petty selfishness of striving
and planning for "self instead of for others?
Every day may be our last day why, then, not strive
to live as we would live if it were and let tlx- Christmas
spirit live in our hearts, not one day a year, but three hun
dred and sixty-five days, and the joy of the brief Christ-
mas tide will then be a life-long! joy for we will have
solved the riddle of existence the. mystery-of the niillen
ium, the source of all happiness, and life will indeed be
worth the while.
AN IDEAL CANDIDATE.
In Judge W. II. Canon an excellent selection has been
made for a candidate for mayor. Probably no one in Med
ford is more capable of satisfactorily filling the office.
Judge Canon combines great executive ability with long
..experience as a public official. He is familiar as few
others with the duties and reuii'ements of public office,
and there is no doubt of his ability.
Judge Canon is a comparatively new coiner in Med
ford, having lived here but a few years, but his record in
his former home, Merrill, Wis., a city of 10,000 popula
tion, is an excellent one. Since his arrival here he has
been elected justice of the peace and appointed United
States commissioner, lie is an attorney by profession, but
was forced by ill health to abandon practice.
In his former home Judge Canon has the reputation of
doing thoroughly whatever he undertakes and for this
reason he was prominent in public life for a quarter of a
century. In 1878 he began his public career, serving two
terms as district attorney of Lincoln county, tn 188!1 ho
was elected councilman ; in 188.) he was appointed postmas
ter of Merrill, and in 1888 he was elected county judge,
lie resigned this position in 18!)0 to become state laud com
missioner of Wisconsin. In 18!)(i he was appointed Unit
ed States marshal for the western district of Wisconsin.
Upon the expiration of his term he was again elected
councilman and made a member of the boaid of public
works, which offices he filled until his departure for Med
ford in l!)0.-. In addition to the enumerated offices, he
was also city clerk and justice of the peace.
With Judge Canon it is a case of the office seeking the
man, and Medford will be fortunate if it secures his serv
ices as chief executive.
