Johnson-Burns Mill in
Australia Is lor a King's
Ransom
NKW YORK, Doc. 23. Only a little
more than Itaroo days to wait, and tho
world's heavywight championship, tbo
blue ribbon of pugilism, will again be
decided. Any ottaor little tnilta to bo
pulled off this week aro oclipsed as
topics of conversation iu sporting cir
cles bv the bout in far away Sydney,
Australia, which will settle the long
mooted question of supremacy betwei
Tommy Burns mid .luck Johnson. Al
though the battlefield is more than H,
000 miles from Broadway, the interest
is just s intonso us if it was to be
staged at some nearer polut.
Is it a fake?1 ia the question which
all the fight fans aro asking each other
tu.t;i ; and the answer id not yet agreed'
upon. There are many sport who be
lieve that a Barns victory will be proof
positive of a "fixed' Affair sine
they hold that with Johnson in good
condition and fighting for all that is
in him, Burns has no chance whatover
to retain the title. Granted that the
match is on tho square,-: it oortaittly
looks as if the next world's champion
will We a black man. Among the few
who believe that the mill is on the level
Jack Twin Sullivan.
Twenty-Four Foot Bin. . ,
The news that Burns and Johnson
will fight In a 84-foot ring haa caused
considerable comment on Broadway.
Burns is practically in charge of the
arrangements for the mill, and has
everything his own way, hence the con
clusion that he is responsible for the
114-foot ring plan. Tommy has boen brag
ging that ho will chaso Johnson all
about the ring, and It is evident that
he wnnta nil the room possible for the
Marathon. If Tommy was so certain
that ho would be tho aggressor, it seems
likely that he would havo wanted o
rirg as small as possible, and this leads
to some iete-i-'ting conclusions unnec
essary to set forth. The sir.o of the
ring may prove useful, in case Johnson
should divide to do some of the chas
ing, and Tommy should consider discre
tion the better part of valor.
Canadian Tommy, as a rule, does tit
tle footwork when in tho rinfr at least,
he hasn't when fighting the inferior
scrappers that he has been going up
against during the lust year. Tt is pos
sible that he realizes that Johnson is
an entirely different sort of proposition.
Johnson is macho like Joe Gans in his
style of fighting. While he shifts from
aide to side he needs very little room,
and coold do his best fighting in a ring
half as big as the ene erected far the
coming bout.
In recent yearn 84 foot rings have
been decidedly out of fashion, and very
few important boots have been fought
in rings of such size. Twenty feot Is
the average of the modern ring, and
many clubs use 18 foot enclosures for
the fighters.
Still, it must be admitted that the
larger the ring the better the chance
of getting away from an aggressive
opponent. And Tommy Burns always
was a canny lad, with both eyes peeled
for the main chance. He Isn't going
to let that titlo Blip away from him for
lack of precautions.
