Best Turner, who has been helping in
the clenring of the orchard tract of the
Ashland Archards company, met with
an accident' last Saturday which will
lay hirn off from active work for some
time. They were using a stamp puller,
and Bert had gone up to chop a root,
when the stump pulled out of the
ground without any warning of its
coming and struck Bert on the shin of
one leg.
Miss Minnie Chapman, who is now
teaching the Anderson creek school,
went to Central Point last Friday to
visit with her sister, Miss Lucy, who
teaches in thnt school.
A pleasant surprise party was given
in honor of Miss Annie Bailey, at the
Bailey home up Wagner creek last Fri
day night to which there was a large
attendance and a fine time had. Games
were played and a fine lunch served to
which everyone did justice.
W. A. Burr rof Roseburg was a recent
Medford visitor.
Mrs. Ben A. Lowell of Woodville was
attending to her Christmas shopping in
Medford recently.
Roscoe A. Johnson of Chicago has
decided to locate in Medford.

R. C. F. Astbury, proprietor of the
Riverside orchards, near Gold Hill, is
now having an additional 16 acres plant
ed to pears and apples. He will plant
650 Bartlett and d'Anjou pears and
200 more apple trees. He reports a
small crop of apples this year, owing to
a late frost. Last year Mr. Astbury re
ceived the record price for Spitzenberg
apples in New York.
Ashland has a school population of
1424, according to the census just coin
pleted by School Cletrk T. H. Simp
son. Of these girls are fn the major
ity, numbering 727, to t97 boys. The
gain over last year is 60. ; A? special
meeting of the Voters of the' school
district has been called to voto the an
nual tax for the maintenance of the
schools for the year 1909.
