NEW YORK, Pec 1(1. Bod broad
cloth and Burge will be wen on the
streets of New York thin hcosou, but
broadcloth will perhaps baamed most
frequently for the drcwy ateruuon fo
tiwie and aerge for ite $u nip ens and
presoneo of fine triwjniagf. will make
morning dress, though the absence or
presence of fine trimmings will make
either appropriate for any orrnsion.
Sergo is especially an Knglieh fabrie,
but its good, qualities have been at last
token up by Paris and all the smart
' tuilor-mades of this season have a very
Knglish look. They are absolutely plain,
depending upon buttons or facings of
satin or heavy braids for trimmings.
This material, besides being extreuio
ly a la mode, is also serviceable. A
blaek serve is a costume that will be
of use and becoming to the short woduo
of full figure. The skirt should be of
many gored variety ant perfectly plain
with ao plpiU and close-fitting. The
long coat. should be straight in the back
to add to the height, and bound with
black braid. The skirt ban a high, gir
dle with brotelles oyer the should -.if
ami the bodice proper was of Cluny
laee with high collar and long sleeves
having pointed cuffs.
. . Many woniun like the blue serge
above every other kind and there is
no grown that ine tires so little of as a
navy blue serge with perhaps a little
trimming of black braid and possibly
a dash of red tome where about it,,.,A
ilirnrtoire suit of blue serge decorated
- with black ottoman silk or satin pock
ets cellar, rovers and. cuffs, with a
1 wtrnp or two on the gores of the skirt,
will be most servieenble and useful
"one dress" and may with various ac
cessories be made to ring many rbangs.
The Princoss Models.
The pretty prhu-i'ss models still hold
their own, but in the designs for 1909
the long lines are gained by panMs
that arc carried over the shoulders. This
method gives a better fit over the hips
and a more pleasing fullness to the bod
ice, and this last is partly gained by a
fitted girdle on the sides, which has
the appearance of passing under the
front and Unck pane.
A gown of this description was d
voloped In a brown striped pongee. The
skirt was a six gored model, with a
plaited panel in front in one with that
of the waist. Shaped bands were used
to trim the bottom of the skirt. A
shaped band goes around the Y neck
and about the slashed sleeve caps. The
guimpf te made of embroidered filet
bandsjoined together with a very nar
row velvet ribbon. The brown hat was
of felt trimmed with a band of fur and
a huge pompon of cock feathers. Brtwn
shoes and brown gloves and purse comi
pleto the tout ensemble. A pony skin
jacket was provided for the colder davs
and for mild weather a brown cant of
broadcloth in cutaway style wa to b"1

Little White Collars.
' In collars to be worn with the tai
lored waists one sees more of the turn
down white collars with a smart little
bow or lase jabot to finish the front,
or the regular directoire tie may bo
used. .Nearly all the wash waiBts use
such a finish.
Collars for tho silks and net aud
othcrother fine materials are more often
of tho material finely tucked and fin
ished at the top with a frill of lace
or net ox a pompadour ruche.
For a pretty, dross for which one
wishes a few changes, ono may be had
by the uao if filet .and Irish crochat
for a guimpe and sleeves or for a
collar and cuff set. The foundation is
of the filet and in the fancy work
shops are to be found rosettes, flowers
and all sorts of odd designs to bo placed
on a filet lace crochet background. For
instance, a coat set for a block tailored
suit. The filet set was first made the
right size and then small Irish crochet
roses, six for tho collar and three for
each enff werp set round the edge ax
tending 4biif their width over the edge.
The roses wore finished and joined to
gether by - small i crochet, leaves. ;iThe
filet is not cut out from beneath as it
gives a firmer foundation to the set.
The upper part of the collar and cuff
may be finished with a pieot edge.,
...One. of .the best designs for remodel
ing an old waist consists of a girdle or
belt with broard bands passing over the
shoulders in suspender effect with or
without the shaped bretelle effect. ' The
girdle in the high waiBt model should
be of soft messoline or surah silk with
long sash ends, at tho back. Persian
bands or embroidered filet bands make
attractive decorations of this sort.
SENSATIONAL MtTEDEB .

are charged with the murder of the

Erb, at Ked Gables, near Tillage Greeen,
on October 6. Tho women are charged
with murder, voluntary and involun
tary manslaughter.
It is thought that the trial will con
tinue more than a week, and may be
concluded in less time, Mrs. Erb' is at
liberty on bail pending the trial, but
Mrs. Ueisel has been confined to the
Media jail. When arraigned recontly,
both women appeared in court clad n
deep mourning for the man whom they
are charged with slaying.
COST OF CRUISE WOULD
HAVE PAID 17,000 PREACHERS
CHICAGO, Dec. 19. The combined
Hnlr.ricfl of 17,000 ministers for one year
would be needed to pay the expenses
of the presont cruise around the world
of tho United StatcB fleet according to
Charles E. Heals, of the American Peace
society of Host on, who ig in Chicago.
Mr. Heals declares many of the smaller
natious visited have an attack of ".fleet
it is ' and are clamoring for more ships
to koep up their dignity. He deplores
this condition and suggests that raoncv
could be spent to betteT advantage in
many other lines.

will then be had with the steamer.
Tho freight rate to Klamath Falls is
to bo reduced at that time and all ship

the freight house as is done in all cities
having railroad connection. ' ii-
It is not believed that this change

KLAMATH FALLS, , Or., Dec. 39.
The grand jury, which has been in ses
j sion for more than a week, has returned
j true bills against J. B. Melton, Milton
I Hale and William Thompson, who wore
held for the robbery of the Seal look t
&. Daggett grocery store last spring, n
Their trials will .be held at once, ana I
in the meantime the grand jury will con-jj
tinue in session and as soon as a few
other criminal 'investigations are fift-.j
ished will take up the matter of thev
violations ol tne local option mw. it
It is tho opinion of lawyers that this
term of court will be the longest ever, J
held in this county, and that it will j
continue throughout tho greater part of
two months. The saloon men who aip
charged with riolating the prohibition
law feel the necessity of making a Ugh;
if the local option . law is to be given a
thorough test, ancLthey do not take
kindly to the ideathat they were en
