Perhaps ll was because Wlsncr was
the proprietor of the only dry gtiods
tore lu UuUervulo that Lottie Vlnccut
was attracted to Mm, perhaps because
Lottie was uu Inveterate bargain buut
er, aud propinquity la a powerful aid
of Cupid.
It ls'a matter opeu to argument and
not worth the arguing. The 'main
point at Issue As the fact that "Lottie
was attracted and that Sidney Wlsner
repaid that regard with Interest.
TJndervale bad reached that stage of
growth when the "general store" had
commenced to resolve Itself Into ita va
rious component parts, not to be 're
united until at some far distant Ony,
when the department store repeated
the original shopkoeplng on a larger
scale and again one could purchase
dress goods and salt flsh, groceries and
harness under one roof.
It was Wlsner who' had seen that the
time was ripe, and the Boston store
was the result. He rented one of the
rooms in the new Benson block and
with new stock and fixtures gave the
place the aspect of a city establish
ment. Underrate was delighted with
the change, none more so than Lottie.
She was a born bargain Bend, aud as
her parents were wealthy she had the
money to gratify hor passion, with the
result that from the Orst she had beer.
Winner's best customer.
Even after the business reached a
point where lie was able to put on two
clerks be made it a point to wait upon
her himself.
iibttio delighted in her personally
conducted shopping tours, nnd from
visiting lu the store Wlsner passed to
visits to her home. 1
Wlsner also bsgan to watch bis bank
account grow. From the first his store
had prosticred.'nnd be determined that
when his profit and loss account show
ed a fair balance on the proper side he
would put his fate lo the test.
Homer Vincent was president of the
bank nnd trust company, nnd Wlsner
wnnted to . be nble to make a good
v-hen he went to ask for Lot
tie's hand, though he could not hope
to equal the Vincent fortune.
, Fie had not long to wait, for the new
store prospered mightily, and the time
noon came when Wlsner began to re
hearse the speech he should make to
Lottie's father when he should first
have spokcu to Lottie.
It was a simple matter to prepare
folk speech t'cr the elder Vincent. He
said It'ovor until fie believed that ho
must repeat It' In hla sleep. The trou
ble now was to speak to Lottie.
He knew that Lottie would not lie
won by the simple suggestion that
tlic'y gef married. ''Wnn 'the 'Clem-:

ou'd forget everything mat you nao

They wouldn't stand for real proHsals

our attention to the lovemaking.
"When the right time conies you'll

You'll Just rather her In. aud It's all
over before you realise It."
Bonulugton accepted the cigars that
Wlsner thrust upou blui, and Wlsner
went back to the store happy In the
possession of exjiert optnlou. He puz
zled over the comment through the
day, and when Lottie came In to see
about some dress lining he gazed hun
grily at the flushed fuce and wondered
when the right time would come.
Apparently It was not tho right time
yet, for Lottie left the store with a
bundle uuder her arm, and his nearest
approach to sentiment bad been to
cut tho price of the lining 2 cents a
yard.
Ho thought of a dozen clever
speeches be might have made, but not '
until sno had gone.
He was still thinking them over as
he dressed the window that evening.
Wlsner made a point of frequent
changes lu the display, and every Fri
day evening he fastened a canvas
screen outside the plate glass and
changed the dressing, running out
many times to observe the effect be
fore be pulled down the Inner curtains
nnd took down the screen, content
that the Saturday shoppers would be
attracted by bis display. '
He bad just commenced to dress the
window after removing the old stock
when ;one corner of the screen wns
lifted and Lottie's smiling face was
seen through the glass.
Wlsner smiled and nodded in reply
to her greeting, and he was about to
beckon her to wait until be could join
her on the sidewalk when his hand
truck the stool on which rested the
new price tags. He caught up the top
one aud pinned It on his coat, striking
an attitude In imitation of the dummy
forms.
Lottie Inugbed at the sign, which
read, "A Real Bargain at the Price,"
and tbe end of the screen dropped.
For one awful moment Wlsner
thought that she bad been disgusted
by the clowulsh appeal.
He could not know tluU even eyes
that are gray and unromantlc can tell
their story of love.. Lottie bad rend
their plea, and a moment luter Wlsner
beard tbe store door open and close
again, and a moment later Lottie's1
face appeared at tbe door to tbe win
dow. "I think I'll take that bargain. Sid
ney," she said aa her cheeks were
'dyed a deeper red. "You can wrap It
up, and I'll take it home wltb me to
talk to father." t .'; J
