in other ways, and will rent up.
Mont H tort ing authorities agree that
there are only four men now seriously
to be eoiotidcred .la csoirants for the
Dane's lightweight mantle.. Those men,' tones were not familiar to him: they
in the order of their ability are: Jack 1 did not reenll the voice of his wife,
Blackburn, George Mensic, Packey Mc- Still conceiving himself the victim of
Fa Hand and Freddie Welsh. There is a dream, he again went to Bleep. It

.Mr. Jones watt a popular young busl
iwhh urn i In the city of B. Ills wife
was u wouiuu of almng emotion and
most dellcatit perceptions. lie t ween I
tbein there existed a rare sympathy !
which extended to al! the faculties. i
Mrs. Jones fell 111. and after a few
weeks' aK-tuy, during which her bus ;
band waited on her with a constancy j
not often seen, she died that Is, she
appeared to be dead. There was no
question about It Id the doctors' mind.
A certiorate was Issued and an under
taker called In. But for the fortunate
circumstance that Mr. Jones was cpV
posed to embalming there would be no
Ktory to tell unless it wcro of another
person apparently dead who was re
vived for ;i moment under the lunge of
the e in h liner's knife.
Saved from that fate, Mrs. Jones was
laid out In her burial robe, placed In a
ooffln and on the third day was burled
In a re met pry some distance away.
ITer Imsl.nnd was greatly affected, so
much thai his relatives feared an at
tack of melancholia. His uncle, wish
ing to arouse his spirits and divert his
attention, remained in the house the
the funeral and was a ,
valuable witness, as it proved, of an
event so astounding as to be almost
beyond belief. ' ' !
For an hour or two that evening they
talked chiefly about the dead and then
went to bed. Mr. Jones, after tossing
upon his pillow for a long time, fell
Into a troubled sleep. In the middle
of the night he heard a voice calling
his name. "George. George!" The
133 pounds and go six rounds. He has
mot Oans a number of times and the
former world 'b champion could never
"beaut of having beaten the Philadel
phia!! In a decisive fashion ms beat
Mcmsic, but McFarlcnd and Welsh al
wnys sidestopped tho "old master."
If MeFarland, or, in fact, anyone of
tho three, refuse to meet Blackburn it
will bo a public confersion that they
do not want any of liio game and tho
public should immediately drop them
from further consideration regarding
lightweight honors. As Nelson won his
laurels from a negro, no such petty ex
cuse as drawing the color line should
lie tolerated. All four men nro natural
lightweights, although Blackburn is of
abnormal build and enjoys physical ad
vantages of height and reach -which the
others (In not possess Hut if he makes
the weight l.'l.'t pounds at the appointed
time thorn should be no quibble.
Kelson is entitled to a rest and to
ronp the fruits of his victory. Tho
elimination tourney would require threo
contests, if none get cold feet, and by
that time tho Dane would be ready to
meet tho winner. It matters little to
the pride of llegewieh whether it is a
Blackburn, a MrKnrlnml, a Welsh of a
Memsic, they all appear alike to hun,
and tho winner ca;i feel assured that
the Dane will sign for ar match jn jig-timo.
Prepaid Railroad Orders.
"Something which is of considerable
interest to the public generally and
which is perhaps not generally known
is the system of prepaid orders now la
efToct between stations of the Southern
Pacific company and all points in the
United States. By means of this system
tickets may be purchased at Medford
from any place In the United States and
mailed or telegraphed direct to tho
party wishing to come here. Sleeper
accommodations and small amounts of
cash in connection with these tickets
diay also be forwarded at the iimt
time." tf
t his ears. So real was It that, although
be was awake and remembered per
fectly the death, the funeral and all
that happened In the preceding four
days, he searched the room for her
who had thrice called him by name.
Finding that he was alone, be rush
ed Into his uncle's room crying: "Get
up! Get up! We must go to the ceme
tery! She Is allvel She Is calling met"
The uncle, skeptical as he was by
nature, was carried away by Jones
Impetuosity. Both men threw on some
clothing, and, while one harnessed a
horse to a light buggy, the other pro
cured spades. Thus equipped, they
drove to the cemetery at a gallop. The
sun rose as they leaped out at the
grave and began to dig.
Mrs. Jones bad been burled the pre
vious afternoon. Her husband shovel
ed away the earth in a frenzy of en
ergy. It was firmly fixed In bis mind
that she bnd been burled alive and
that be might yet be In time to save
her. Inspired by hla nephew's excite
ment, the uncle dug with a vigor al
most as great as Jones'.

i was moving. She was trying feebly to
turn over lu her narrow bed. She
gazed at him with eyes that saw not.
She was unconscious of her situation.
He passed bis arms about her and

her from the grave, placed her In the
buggy and drove home. Physicians
were called lu. Under close medical
care she slowly recovered. Every pre
caution was taken to guard ber from
the knowledge of what had happened,
and all who were In the secret pledged
themselves to silence lest the shock
of that revelation of ber burial and
resurrection might prove fatal to her,

SOUTHERN PACIFIC WILL
DIVERT RENO TRADE
KLAMATH FALLS, Dr., Dec. 19.
U is now evident that the Southern Pa
cific is to play a promlnont pnrt in
diverting tho Lake county trade from
Uh old channel via Kcno. The announce
ment nn just been made that on and
aftr .Tmniary 15 every Southern Pa
cific ticket office will have on sale
through tickets to Bonanza, Bly and
Laltevii'w. Tho first two places aro xn
oiistcrn Klamath county, but Lakovlow
it the county seat of Lake county and
the center of operation for the Oregon
Valley Land company, which will bring
severn 1 thousand people in southern Ore
gon next year. '
It is evident that tho officials of tho
Southern Pacific aro after the traffic
that will be caused by the land subdi
vision and colonization and if the N.
O. O. running northward from Reno
to Alturas is not extended and better
rates established it is quite likely that
tho Southern Pacific will, with the as
sihtaiuK'p of both Lako and Klamath
counties, succeed in making Klamath
Fnlls the distributing onter for all of
Luke county.

THE DALLES HAS NOW
J 15,000 CITY HEADQUARTERS
THE D.VIJ.ES. Or.. Dec. 19. The
new city hall was formally tendered
by Contractor R. D. Maxon at a meet
ing of the council last night and was
accepted.
The completion of this 1 15,000 struc
ture marks an important epoch in tho
history of The Dalles, for the munici
pality is about to remove from its old
quarters into the new building. The
new hity hall is one of tho most artistic
and substantial buildings in the Btnte.
Tho design was mado by C. J. Crandall,
while the contract work was done by R.
D. Maxon.
The old city quarters served well and
long as a meeting place for the offi
cials of old Wasco couaty being built
in 1859, five yeara before 'Wasco conn
ty was formed from the Clackamas and
Khampoeg district. The old" city hall
was used as a courthouse for a number
of years and was the first courtheuse
constructed between the Rocky aad Cas
sade mountains.
