Bedford's first posuilTire-, made out of an old soap
box, can lie seen in the windows of lliisse-y s cash store, on
AVesI .Seventh street. It was roust meted in 1SS: y ..
S. Howard, "the father of .Medford," at that time post
master, mayor, express agent, store keeper and genera
poh-bah of the crossroads.
Though only containing a few partitions, the box was
ample for the mail business of I'o years ago. Medford
at. that time had but one frame house, that occupied by
Mr. Howard, who ran a general merchandise store, sur
veyed the townsite between times and did other public and
private business of too many kinds to catalogue.
With the survey of the railroad through Medford be
gau the growth of the city, which has continued steadily
ever since;. The soap box was soon too small and had to
be discarded for more modern conveniences.
From the small beginning of a soap box a quarter cen
tury ago, the postofficc has grown until it now occupies a
storeroom LiDxlUO feet in size, and even it is too small
The half dozen partitions have expanded into 500 self-lock
ing boxes with many more demanded. Instead of the two
minutes a day taken to sort the mail of 2o years ago, the
entire time of half a dozen people is consumed. The few
straggling farmers coming for mail have been multiplied
into thousands and a long line of expectants Maud in wait
anxiously after every train. The .$2 or $1! monthly receipts
have now been rolled into over a 1000 a month, and only
the masterly inactivity of the city council '.n not enforc
ing street signs and house numbering prevents as many
hitters being brought to each house in the city daily as
was brought to the Medford of l!5!.
Twenty-five years have witnessed the silent farm made
into a bustling city; have seen the chaparral give way to
brick blocks and paved streets; the one country store has
been supplanted by scores of modern emporiums of com
merce equal to those of a large city; the youngest town of
southern Oregon has blossomed into its lusty metropolis.
The coming 12 .j years should see as much relative prog
ress as the past in the upbuilding of Medford. The land
about is as studded with natural resources as the jewelled
collar of a great lady of leisure is sprinkled with gems
resources as yet hardly touched. To be true, some '10,000
or 50,000 acres of the fields of-waving, tassled grasses have
given away to world-record-beating orchards, whose; prod
ucts are famous in all markets of the world; but there is
room for ten times the acreage now planted. Outcrop
pings of gold bearing rock have been surface scratched
and yielded millions, but little systematic effort made
to develop mines, (treat lields of coal underlie the eastern
rim of the valley, here and there sending a black vein to
the surface yet serious development is hardly yet under
way. .1 he great Joresls still stand untouched by the hand
of man. An immense body of copper underlies the peaks
of the Niskiyous just scratched deep enough to indicate
its immensity. Power enough to dwarf Niagara is daily
lost in the roaring of the U'ogue.
Will the growth of Medford continue? Yes, if the
spirit of progress rules the future! nothing can stop hi'r.
And progress means a unite-el e-l'fort for the upbuileling of
the city and the deve-lopnicnl of re-soiiree-s not the- wast
ing of e-ne-rgy in factional fights, or in discord but a long
pull, and a strong pull, and a pull altoge-tlie-r
