Of the llsJ pent that have been id-n
tified in the 1'uiti-d States that feed on
and brinig destruction to the orchards,
vineyard it, gardens and farm crops,
Kugue River valley has but 14 of them.
The other 1172 are headed this way, a yd
.f the most rigorous enforcement of the
pent iuupcvtiuD laws is not bad, from
oue to a dozen new pests will show up
each season in this valley to add to the
farmer 's burdenc. It was only two
tears ago that the pear blight got in
here from California. The melon wilt
is a recent importation and the anthrac
nose has not been here long enough to
be counted a native, and the other pests
are all importation for Koguo Kiver
valby, when white men first settled
here was a farmer s paradise in its
fret-do ni of petit.
The p-ts that have Imm-u brought iu
here are in a fair way to be subjected
and even exterminated so vigorous has
been the warfare against them, but the
problem that is seriously confronting
ilie orchardists, the gardener and the
farmer is how to keep out the multitude j
of pests that are likelv to come here
:ind to recognize them nhoudl they make
iheir way into the valley. To be fore
warned in the jiest warfare is to have
tho hat tie half won for the farmer.
And this is what Professor P, J. O'Gara
of the department of agriculture is do
ing for the fruitgrowers of this sec
tion in the series or Jectures that he
in giving in Medford under the auspices
of the Rogue Hiver Horticultural socie
At the lecture that he will give
this Saturday afternoon in this citv he
will fully describe the pests now in
Ifoguo ICiver valley nnd those that are
likely soon to be he-e. That the fruit
growers may see what these pests look
like and be able to recognize them
should they apear in their orchard".
