OUR WEALTH OF POWER
A booklet of .interest to evoryonoo in Oregon is the re
port of the Oregon conservation commission just publish
ed, of which more extended notice is made in the news col
umns. - The pamphlet is one of the results of the congress
of governors inaugurated by President Roosevelt last
spring for the conservation of the natural resources of
the country.
"Each river system, from its headwater in the forest
to its mouth on the coast, is a single unit and must be treat
ed as such,' said the president, and the booklet carries out
this spirit as well as the "declaration" of the governors
at tin? "While House conference. "Sources of national
wealth exist for the benefit of the people and monopoly
thereof should not be tolerated."
The report is of especial interest to people of the Rogue
River valley, as it gives an accurate estimate of the water
power going to waste in the streams of this section, esti
mated at a total of exceeding .100,000 horse power, as
against 2f0,000 horse power possible to generate at Niagara
.rails, thus it is possible to generate power enough here
to turn every factory wheel on the Pacific coast, light all
the cities and run the railroads.
The computations are based on an assumption of 80
per cent efficiency of water wheels. Only !)0 per cent of
the tall in each section has been used. The average low
water tlow lias been used.
Of the possible .100,000 horse power, only .1000 has been
developed, just one per cent, and yet this is suffii lioiit to
Jiglit all the towns, drive the factory wheels and operate
the mines of this section.
Statistics regarding water power and the laws gov
erning water rights, irrigation systems projected, timber
and other natural resources, are given in full in the report.
