la a horse endowed with a souif
If person had asked me that Mon
day morning I would have answered
without giving the matter much thought,
-no.-- am smce tnat time 1 have re
versed my opinion, for on Mondav nirtst
i saw uon iiuano, a Httie blaek pony
that is attracting considerable atten
tion in Medford, And as I eatne away
from the Bijou I found myself pia
iling over the problem, "Has a horse
a soul I" Don Fulano steins to be the
answer.
This littla animal goon proves to the
most skeptical that there is something
different in his performance from tliat
of the ordinary trained animal. The
difference is that be is not trained, but
is educated. If he is only trained then
indeed has Dr. Ellis, his owner, doae
his work well aad so sueeesafuiiy bides
the signals, which a trained horse mast
reeoguize to obey, s to completely de
ceive his audience. For myself, I pre
fer to oeneve mat Uen Fulano .1st edu
cated and not trained.
Turning the dictionary we find as
a definition of the word mind, "the in
tellectual or rational faculty in man;
the understanding; the sower that con
ceives, judges or reasons; also the en
tire spiritual nature; the soai,'
Taking this definition and the fact
that all people agree that man is the
reflection and Image of God and from
that source derives his intelligence,
mind, life soul, as our hypothesis, we
can, through a logical sequence of rea
soning, say that any animal possessing
reasoning powers may be smd to pos
sess a soul. And as Don Fulano shows
that bo thinks by hut marvelous per
formance, he may bo said to possess a
soai.
Dr, Ellis says he has the highest
possible authority as the foundation for
his belief that animals have a goal, aad
quotes it front the Bible, Ecclesiastics,
chapter 2:18-20-81, which reads in part:
For that which befaiieth the sons of
men befaiiath beasts; yea, they have
all one breath; so that a man hath no
pre-eminence aboye the beast. All go
unto one place; all are of the dust and
all tarn to dust again. Who knoweth
the spirit of man that goeth upward and
the spirit of the beast that goeth down
ward to the earth f
Mayhap, after all, horses have souls,
Don's story of bis own life as it ap
pears on souvenir postal cards, reads:
My name is Bon Fulano, I am 3
years old, I wag bred -pa the famous
Marcus Daly stock farm in the heart
of the beautiful Bitter Root valley in
western Montana. I am coal blaek m
color. My aire was Dolgamo and my-dam
was Bonnie Wilkes, which makes me
a standard bred trotting horse. I have
a cute little dimple in my right shoul
der, 1 commenced to go to school when
I was 3 months old. At first I did not
know what to make of it, but when I
began to understand and had learned
to do a few things I liked my school
lays very much, I have a man who
does nothing bat care for me. He spends
hours each day rubbing my legs ami
body and gives ma a bath once a day
to keep my coat glossy.
I am .almost always good, bat some
times I would rather play than work,
for yon see I am quite young yet, and
t do love to run and kick lip my neeis
and play.
I would like to have a lot of ymi
boys aad girls get on my back and take
a rido if 1 felt sare you would not fall
off and get hurt. I travel from one eity
to another and see a great deal of the
world. I would like to tell you a lot
more, but I haven't time, so you must
excuse mo. Sincerely yours,
DON FULANO.
Don does a very good turn at the
Bijou and those who love animals
will enjoy seeing this little pony at
work. Tha management hag announced
a matinee for Saturday, at which an
address will be given by Dr. Ellis on
humane treatment of animals. This in
itself is of great educational advantage
to the children, But Don has to be
seen to be appreciated, H, H. H.

SALEM is the most popular beer in Northern
California and Southern Oregon. It is acknowl
edged to be the equal of the very best eastern

liked better than others. The proof for this as
sertion lies in drinking Salem beer. If you wish
