PASTOR RUINED BY WINE
AND FAST LITE IN NEWPORT
LA CROSSE, Wis., Nov. 30. Alleged
by relatives to have contracted the
liquor habit at Bociety functions in
Newport, where he was pastor of mem
bers of the Vaudorbilt family, the Rev.
S. W. Moran was committed to the
Wisconsin state hospital for the insane
at Moudota today. The patient is an
Episcopal clergyman, 5(i years of age,
and for years whs considered one of the
rising men in this church.
Assignment to a fashionable purish
in Newport, where ho became an habit
ual use of liquor and where he
quired other expensive habits, is said to
havo caused his downfall. He arrived
hero in the summer just after tho de
parture of the Rev. O. N, M oiler of
Christ Episcopal church, of La Crosse,
on a trip to Europe, and, representing
that lie ami been sent to fill the pulpit
during the rector's absence, ho qbtained
loans from loading inoiuborB of the con
gregation.
The Rov. Mr. Moran is alleged then
to have expended tho money borrowod
a way to scandauzo tho congroga
Hon, to which he had not been assigned.
SEVEN BILLIONS OP DOLLARS
Tu nil the circle of all your acquaint
ances, in all the circle of all your read
ing, do you know of a singlo billion
aire t I don't mean do you think you
"know. I mean do you know that you
know of a siugle capitalist who io really
a billionairef That is a lot of money,
you know. At four per cent, interest
it means an income of three and a third
million dollars a mouth. I'm not talk
ing of capital that is a quarter water
and a quarter hot air and only half hard
cash or convertible realty. I'm talking
of wealth that can be handled with your
hr.udK nnd measured with your eyes,
wealth that doeBu't require convul
sions of frenzied finance to be con
verted into tonnes of tile mint.
You acknowledge frankly you don't
really know of a tuuglo billionaire iu
the history of tho world. Much less do
you know of any group of capitalists
in the wurld whoso combined wealth
would innko twenty billions and whoac
twenty billions pay a yearly dividend
of seven billions. A dividend of seven
billion dollars a year means an income
of five hundred and oighty millions n
mouth, or nineteen million dollnra n
lay. Talk of tho futo of Midas Any
.-apitalist or group of capitalist? who
had to tako oaro of that much money
day would have genuine oiivuIhious
in frenzied finance.
Such n capitalist, collectively, is the
Cnited States farmer. Such a dividend,
ollectivoly, does tho soil of tho Unitul
-itntes yearly hand out to the f urine r
nnn. By tho lnat census tho capital
invested in agriculture in tho Unit d
States was twenty billions, and by tho
last report of the agricultural depart
ment of tho products of tho farm for
11)07 yi lded a grand total of Bovon bil
lions. Compare theso figures to the
billion-dollar steel trust, over which the
whole world went duffy a few yon i s
ago; and the magnitude of tho greatness
and of tho growing greatness of ag
ricultural interests in America becomes
apparent. In fact, it would bo hard to
put your hand on a single department
of industrial life or constructive work
in the United States which would com
pare in importance to the permanent
value and yearly yields of tho farm.
Then remember, too, that of nil the :
manufacturing interests in the United;
States seventy-five per cent are depend- j
cut on the farm for raw products.
