The Portland Oregon ian in discussing the strife be-
twoon a power tor good and one tor evil says:
,,,.,..,., i0k we behold injustice' and wrong. Perhaps there
i.... ,.r twin than in former times, but thoy still exist and very often they
uru victorious in human affairs. No matter how good the intention may bo,
no matter hnw lofty or hty tho indwelling Ideal may bo, our schemes, our
ciislmin, our Institution, seem invetoratoly to produce a harvest of miBory
anil wrong. So 'rite is this dreadful rule thut men have learned to sneer
ut Midi words as "love," "brotherhood," "non resistunco," "optimism"
anil It has become a' mark of sound prudence In conduct to shun every pro
jwt wliicli promises ideal good or even vory much material good."
The indwelling ideal is the test of man and is the real
mail. The body, the mere animal part of man, the crea
lure of the flesh and blood, of whims and prejudices
these iiiv the mask which hide the' veal jty. The spiritual
being is often completely -hidden,, even from those inti
mates who know his acts well enough toguessathisthoughts
and motives,' for at best the estimate of the inner man must
be a. guess,- because no uiUn! can be sure of another's mo
tive. A shrewd and broad-minded man can make, how
ever, a pretty fair estimate, if the acts 'and professed prin
ciples of a man through a long period be taken as the cri
tenon. But so few are broad-minded and so few go to
tho heart of things and recognize the fact that good and
s evil in man nt 'once the -"glory and the scandal of the
; universe" are inextricably mixed. -Judgments are based
ui)6n the judge's personal predilections and usually with
; a side glance at the critic's own failings. It is not "what
a man has or even what he does which expresses the worth
"oT man, but what he is," and this real man often remains
undiscovered until some vital lest is made.
"Good, and ill," says Hume, "are universally interinin
gled and confounded happiness and misery, wisdom and
folly, virtue and vice," They certainly are in real men.
who, ns Alexander-Hamilton l'cmarks, are "reasoning but
not reasonable animals.". Many men who bear the aspect
of evil arc heroes in essentials, and many men whose de
portnicnt is entirely correct arc at1 heart untrustworthy
and base. ' ' ;
Sonic men of great respectability cannot stand great
tests, while, on the other hand, -many men who do not mak
a good appearance before the world are sound at hear
and possess the essentials of nobility of spul possess
indwelling ideal. -'

1 W1XTKU IN THE ROGUE RIVER VALLEY.
Neither the fabled skies of Arcadia, the amethyst hues
of Italy or the amaranthine tiuts of California surpass
the splendor of the heavens that arch the Rogue River
valley in this most, delightful season of the year. Tl
noonday sun showers the multi-colored hills with gold
a delicate touch of winter has painted in brilliance the
fast falling leaves, and yellow and crimson and the dark
of the evergreen mingle in tangled profusion along river
bed and hill slopes; the russet summer brown of the Held
is changing as if by magic into a tender green; the stubbl
of grain Holds is losing itself in long, straight black fur
rows. The orchards have lost their emerald 'dress hav
yielded their fruit and their once laden branches strete
forth in naked and needed rest; the mountains that towe
in the distance on either hand are wearing their white
dress of white.

i tie Harvest is over, an peace oi mind, sue hroods in con
lent over the past and prepares by a season of rest for the
labor of the future. A tinge of frost wipes out the in
growths of a too luxuriant period, and dispels the unheal
thyjnists that Iter wanton profusion has engendered, so
she may start anew and reclothe the world with a yet moi
brilliant verdure.
Ao season could be more delightful than this late an
tmnii or early winter, in the Rogue River valley, where
tiMicli ot ice sends the blood tingling, casts out ill humor
and awakens human energy to higher endeavor; wlu
radiant noons alone furnish a sufficient reason for exist
once, and where the splendor of the night with its new born
slender crescent of silver-gold, hanging in the west, sup
plies inspiration for (he present and hope for the future.
