IT'S GOOD COMPETITION.
The Morning -.Mail instead of answering the issues
raised by The Tribune regarding its circulation affidavit
gives the editor of The Tribune a slap on the wrist and
calls him a naughty, man. Whatever The Tribune editor
in and his personality doesn't concern the public, he isn't
a sissy, nor does his editorial-column consist of ungram
inatical gush and sickening slush sandwiched between scis
sored stuff.
The Tribune has no quarrel with the Mail. The two
papers arc not in the same class, in news, editorials, make
up or circulation. Fair comparison can only favor The
Tribune. The papers, day by day, speak for themselves
louder than perjured affidavits and stolen editorials can
possibly do.
The Mail is certainly as good competition as The Tri
bune could have. It is an overgrown country weekly, with
the earmarks of the country sticking out like the fretful
spines of the porcupine. Its policy is the customary color
less policy of some country papers, as firm as the jelly
1 ish, as direct as the crab, as grasping as the devil fish
It has as many legs for running away from a subject as a
centipede, and the few thought waves that permeate it are
dnctured with the beautiful astral glow that emanates fron
that delightful pharisaisni that prays on the mourners
bench tor a tew pennies out of the collection.
The Mail is very proud of its mushroom growth-
which is a a solid and stable as the toadstool yet the Mai 1
lias been long established and it is as hollow within as oik
of those old oaks whose heart; has long been eaten out and
only the twisted1 gnarled shell remains to give sustenance
to its writhing scanty top.
"Did anyone ever hear of one of those immunity bath
Jellows. being reappointed to ofhee?" queries the Mail
Sure; that's sometimes part of the bargain especially
when the reappointment is made at the instance of special
agents whom the immunity bather helped make a record
by turning states evidence and so helping convict his neigh-
. nors wlnle saving himself.
"Aviator Brown dropped down ou us yesterday, but we
were not hard hit, as wc were fully prepared for him,"
says the Mail editorially. Does it refer to Arthur and
his "circumstances alter cases?"

CONSIDERED CHANGES IN
JOHNSON ROAD BILL
I'OHTI.AND, Or., Nov. 24. Changes
in I he Johnson road bill worn eonsidered
yestcrdny by committees representing
Ihn gorlij roads workers of this stnte.
Tile sessions were held in tho Commer
cial club convention room, one in the
morning mid another last night. Change's
ilecided upon the bill wero of a minor
I'haracler, and it appears likely that the
measure fathered by Senator A. A.
Johnson will be practically as originally
.ration wnen it is siiliiuitted to the
coining session of the legislature.
I'erhaps the most important nindifi
ntioli made by the committees rep
resenting tho different organizations of
the state interested in good ronds was
the proposition to do away with the
road engineer provided fur in the bill.
and the foreman of the state road com
mission, will, it is expected, carry on
the work proposed io be iloue by the
state engineer.

of the best known workers in the irood

SPOKANE, Wash., Nov. 2-1. Harry
I.. Hleeekor, i-hairuiun of the executive
committee uf the Northwest Electrical
Light & Power association, has called
a special meeting of the lust named or
ganization for December 18, at Port
land, to discuss a plan to fumiliurize
eastern iuvestora with the opportune
ties in the smaller towns in the north
west, especially in places where elec
tric power may be distributed for irri
gation purposes. The larger cities have
been provided for. The committee will
ilso take up tho question of establish
ing a uniform rate for electric liglit
.ng companies in these towns, where
loine concerns are riipning at a loss,
Vhile others are making overcharges.
Publicity Company Planned.
A publicity company iB planned un
ler the supervision of the association
or tho development of tho entire north
.vest, the territory embraced including
iVashington, Idaho, northern Oregon
ind western Montana. Important im
irovcments and necessary extensions for
the sinnller towns of this territory have
leeu handicapped by lack of capital,
mil the failure heretofore to conviuce
astern capital of t lie marvelous possi
bilities and fields for investment iu
'loctricnl securities. Eastern capital is
Jiy of theso securities in towns of 4000
ind .1000, comparing western cities with,
those of the same size in the east, which
'nstead of increasing, show less popu-'
ntinu, sometimes, at the end of ton 1
years, while tho reverse is true of i
western cities, which forgo ahead with
remeudoiis strides.

there's no need for shipping in carloads of cereal cof

clean, successful right-at-home factory, is
Golden Grain Granules
a strictly northwest product with absolute merit.
For years people of "Washington, Tdaho and Oregon
have been using it instead of coffee, and it stands
without a peer for a high-grade cereal coffee. Ask
your grocer for a box and give it one trial. The pack
ages are larger than ordinary cereal cof foes and cost
only 25e.
All grocery sell it.
