APPLE MOVEMENT
IS TOO LIBERAL
Those growers who havo anticipated
1,1,111,1 prices un apples are doomed
lit disappointment fruni the present, out
lnok, ut hast h;ivh the Journal. Far
too liberal su, plies of apple are cum
iJig al this time, most of them buiiig
Wwg from ihe Hood liiver section.
While praHieally neue of the arri
vals conwiHt of eastern shipping stock,
itniih better quality in shown in arri
vals from every place, than during re
eeut years. While soma ordinary qual
ity fruit is coming forward and sells
at ipiito low figurt'H, there is Utile of
licit mi tt n, wormy and ttcnrhby look
iny stuff now putting in appearunce
whieh usually causes tho price of good
apples in drop. To dato there haa been
but little ehange iu the priee of apples
nlflng Front rtreet, because Front atreet
'is maldiiy every effort to hold up the
price. 'J' here nro two reasons for this.
Tho first and primary reason is the
fact that Front stret has bought heav
ily of apples, and therefore cannot af
ford to tilauli too deeply into quota
tions. On thi other h;.ml, it is tho desire
of tho committsiou trade to save ship
pers from loss, for down on tho street
the trade seems to bo of tho opinion
that just so many boxes and curs of
apples will Imj consumed, whether the
market is at a certain price or 2iic
lower.
Depend:-, Upon Future Receipts.
However, the state of the innrket is
rather critical juitt now, and it would
not take much to cause a severe break
in values. Arrivals of apples have
been so heavy that all available ware
room space in tho wholesale district
lias been filled with tho fruit, and the
locks still contain liberal holdings.
Therefore the -limit of the intako lias
about been reached, and unless there is
a rapid decline in the inward movement
growers are liable to seo prices that
will net pay t ho cost of transporta
tion. At this limo the very best fruit
can not be sold over $1.75 to $" a box,
and it takes a well-selected and highly
colercd I ics 'den a Hood Kivcr packed
.spit -.erbeig til bring these figures.
What is ordinarily called first-class
apples iu this market will not range
oer $1.25 to $1.5(1, the latter price,
being exceptional. Very good apples
are today selling at $1 to $1.10 ft box,
and some i nl i nary stuff down as low
as 5i)c, with the top around 75c.
