CHARGED WITH
IS HAEEIMAN AFTEB
Fifty murders
Members of Band of Des
peradoes, Captured in
Idaho-Many. Crimes
WALljACK, Idaho, Nov. 11. Pacing
the charge of committing at least 50
murdiTH itntl imiumoralilu rohburios, two
men giving tho nnmts of A. J. Man
ning and O. H. Bliss, said to bo mom here
or a gang of d on pe ratio en. art' under
heavy guard today, for it in fenrrd that
mi uiii'nijn wux uo iniuio uy tnoir con-
fudoratPH to liberate, them.
The charge that led directly-to their
arrest is that of passing checks on rail
road contractors. After searching the
records of tho two prisoners, however.
the police were convinced. that they are
members ot a gang that operated
construction camps and murdered 50
workmen between Grand Forks, Ida
ho, and Taft, Montana. Tn each in
stance robbery was tho motive.
All the dead men were found, some
times as many as three in a day, with
sekulls el-nulled and pockets turned out.
The theory advanced by the polii-o is
strengthened by the f-u-t that the prison
ers own a trunk in which the police
found wigs, fuhio mustaches, a complete
set of burglar's tooto, stolen mining
Btock and a mbli-r stamp for forging
checks. The police authorities are elat
ed over the capture, for they think a
great deal of I heir worry is over onw.

LIQUOR IS CUT OUT
IN WOLF CREEK COLONY
WOLF CRKKK, Of., Nov. 1 1 .Nes
tling snugly nf, the feet of the pine
dud mountains of southern Oregon, in
the northern end of the Roguo Itivor val
ley, is averitnble beauty spot without
a rival on the coast. It is Wolf ("reek
valley, in which "Oregon's Ideal Col
ony" is now forming. Surrounded by
mountains which protect from biting,
destructive storms; possessing soil of
surpassing depth, and fertility, the pur
est mountain water, springs abound
ing everywhere, and much of tho land
sub irrigated;' at an altitude of l.'HS
feet, which does not affect those with
, heart troublo and has a tonic effect
upon people from tho enervating south;
with a rainfall of 83 inches, sufficient
to ; produce the finest flavored and
best keeping fruits and vegetables with
out irrigation, it. is all that its name
Xtgnifies.
Higher than the hope of money-ntak-ing,
tho owner of Wolf Creek and pro
motor of Oregon's Ideal colony, holds
tho purpose of developing a community
which shall be kept as clean morally as
it is proved by nature and every deed
contains a forfeiture clause in cane any
of the property is ever used or allowed
to be used for tho manufacture or sale
of intoxicating liquor. Only those ap
proving this and favorable to character
building institutions are invited to in
vest; those opposing cannot buy at any
price. , ,
Rev. V. ,T. Smith, the founder of tho
colony, was trained in the Lutheran
church and later preferred the Presby
terian; but he is first a Christian and
seeondly a Pr-sbyterina, and has often
been taken for a Methodist. He always
discourages the sectarian spirit, and in
vites" and already lias in the colony rep
resentatives of almost all the denomin
ations, who are working together and
sustaining services without any out
sido help. . ,

The announcement that the Southern
Pacific Railroad company is to obtain
power for the lectrifivatioa of its sub
urban roads from the Great Western
Power company has led to a series of
rumors today that Jlarrinmii,'. with the
Rockefeller interests W lighting for tho
absolute control of nil the power inter

Tho Great Western Power company is
a tiou.d corporation and tho miuoumw-
meut that it will furnish power for
lUrriman's lines iadcates that. Gould
had to make more concessions for nis
peace with Harriman than it . was
thought that ho had inado.
The Standard Oil compauyraml Har

proposition in California with the ex
ception of the Northern Kleefrt Tlotal

believed to bo back of several new

CHINESE CLUBS ARE TO
BE REFITTED FOR USE
RAN FRANCISCO, Cal.f Nov. li'
Anticipating favorable action in the
courts on their application to prevent
the police from entering their places of
business, several of the Chinese "soc
ial" clubs conducted as am ask for
gambling dens have contracted for the
fitting of their cJubs.'
Tho action of. the Chinese follows the
order of .lodge- Sturtevant, citing
Chief of Tolice Biggy to show cause
why the members of the department
should not bo-restrained from entering
tho apparently' respectable places of
business of tho Chinese merchants.
The order of the court is equivalent
to protection from , police interference,
according to .the Oriental mind and
gleeful preparations are under vay to
rpen fine new gambling houses with
all the accessories. These club rooms
are being fitted with traps and de
vices for the . secreting of evidence,
"getaways" and electric bells, and
all the doors are heavily barred.
