Australia Would Prefer
American Apples- Prtoes
Important Factor
"There is a market iu Australia
for Orpfruu apples," bhvb R. P. Hoskius
of 1'iirtliiud in tho Ti'leginui. "Thus
fur (lie upplctrowers of tUis state have
niatU' little or no effort to open up mar
kets for their frui; in that part ef the
world, for the reasou mainly that the
demand in thin country has bt-tn suffi
cient to take all the first cms tipples
produced in the state, and ut good prices
to the producers.
"Hut there are apples in this state,
and large quantities of them, that are
not such us to sell readily at home at
fancy prices. That is true this year, as
it is every year and it miht be profit
able for some of tho growers or dealers
to investigate market possibilities iu
Australia. For the most part Austral
ians have a preference for tho Ben Dav
is and other sorts liko it in character
i:nd keeping qualities and there is a
demand in the island continent now for
considerable quantities of the fruit.
"Only apples that are known to be
first-class keepers could be shipped to
Australia to advantage. Tho Ben Dav
is, which in quality talis short of some
other Oregon apples, it ono of the bent
keepers, and on this account could bo
sent across the Pacific easily. A good
many carloads of this sort are grown in
this state every year, and buico they do
not usually bring top prices here, Aus
tralia may in time prove a good market
for them.
Prices Important Factor
"But prices are nn important factor
in business with Australia, because of
the chance always of shipments being
injured to some extent in tho long voy
age. I f growers hero will ta k o t he
prices that could reasonably bo offered
largo consignments could bo made to
Sidney and Melbourne every year. They
could ge by way of either Sun Fran
cisco or Vancouver."
With Ortleys, Kings, Newtowns, Bald
wins, Home Beauties and other favor
ite sorts the local market for the time
seems to be overstocked, and while
prices now are relatively low, it is pre
dicted in some quarters that thero will
have to bo some reductions if the. big
and growing stocks nro moved. Re
ceipts have been heavy for a month
and they are increasing iu size daily.
Some of the stores are now about full.
For all but the finest Spitr.euhurgs,
which are quoted at $2 to $12. oO a box,
the top prices are $1.7o to $2, and more
are selling daily nt $1.2o to .fl.SO than
above these figures. Tho Oregon crop
this year was a big one, and the size
of it is now beginning to be felt by
the local trade.

A SCENE FEOM "JUST OUT OF COLLEGE," MEDFORD THEATER, NOVEMBER 16.
FRUIT INSPECTOR IN
JOSEPHINE ORCHARDS
Fruit Inspector H. ( Bateham filed
his report on Monday, showing that
during the month of October he per
sonally inspected 200 orchards, large
and small, covering fiomething like
1127 acres of land. Of these 200 or
chards by far the majority had some
scale but iu most cases only a little,
showing that the Sampson spray, which
is being generally ined, is doing work
in eradicating this pest. About one
person in twenty fails to sec much re
sult in spraying and in such cases it is
invariably due to n lack or pruning
off dead branches, rough bark or lack
of thoroughness in applying the spray.
In 23 orchards evidence of pear blight
was found, the most of which had al
ready been destroyed. Forty-one or
chards were found with no serious pests
or diseases". Courier.

liant. The first act is laid in the office

"The Actophone" at the Grand.
The new Actophone moving pictures
at the (irund are drawing immeuso
crowds of satisfied amusement lovers.
The pictures are very realistic, taken
in conjunction with the speaking parts,
and it io quite like attending grand op
era or vaudeville, as the case mny be,
to see nnd hear these marvelous moving
and speaking nnd singing pictures.
Tho management announce tho fa
mous singer, Caruso, ns one of tho at
tractions for this evening's program.
At the Bijou.
One of those big attractions at the
Bijnn tonight. A thrilling western ro
mance ,the kind that- always tikes, is
included in tonight's program. The
cowboys are alive and keep thing stir
ring. ' ' A Southern Romance " is another
subject of exceptional merit. Tho scenes
and characters are typical, and a most
interesting story is carried out. A comic
entitled "Tho' Washerwoman's Re
venge" ic tho big laugh producer, of
the seiison. Don't forgot the big at
traction tonight at the Bijou.
