MEDFORD DAILY TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OKTiOON, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1003. PRAISE FOR this urn h Writer in Sunset Tells of f :; Marvelous Opportunities In Rogue River Valley The fallowing article entitled "In Medford 's Garden" Is by J. A. Wells in the November Sunset: On tuiiio orchard's edgo belong? All the brags of plume and son. Looking Into the encyclopedia ono of the latest to find the coiitouciitnl . range of the apple, wo were arrested quickly by the senteneo: "They nre i also raised in Oregon and California." : After that the ruuge of information in , the article seemed likely to bo acedemic and not cilifyiug. Thero was a little flavor of the rucetruck in the sentence wo curried uwuy, but that may have been a mutter of associated ideas, caught from that thesaurus of wisdom, the daily newspaper, for we have not yet seeu a horso ruee. But the an nouncement that in the appje race, Ore gon "also ran" will startle tho several sections of a state early known to fame as the "Land of the Dig Ked Apple." But that was in tho days of untutored nnture, over which euine an eclipse. We planted tho orchards and weat fishing. Nature made the apple a thing of beau ty to look at, but presently the worms captured it, nnd the unplowed, tinpruned unsprnyed, uncared for trees bccninc a blot on the landscape. Medford Strictly In It. Medford has become the center of the Rogue River valley district, nnd in apple nnd penr production has drawn the attention nnd excited the wonder of half tho world. This has turned upon the quantity r.s well as the surprisitig quality of tho product, the yield of the orchard in number of boxes per ncro, and the price per box in carload lots being quite phenomenal. A yield in sordid gold coin of one thousand dollars nn acre was thought ta be the limit v. few years ago, yet the Roguo River valley has exceeded this in many cases, even climbing as high . nn fifteen hundred dollars an nere. Even the lien Davis, nr. apple whose right to a place in good society is dis puted year after year, has returned over 10,000 from twenty-two acres. Some Other Fruits. Among pears Medford makes a rec ord that overtops her own apples. A carload of du Cornice penrs sold for 4(i'212.SO cross in New York, which nuans about 17 cents n pound at v.'holi sale, or anvwhere from 10 to lo coats apiece for pears. Hurtletts hold the mnsl delicious nee t;vr distilled in nature's laboratory, but tied in their skin; those shipped from Medford realized fi,05 per box in Mon treal, Cnnnila, and $1.00 oa th! Amer ican side. The Doyenne du Cornice is a r.hy bear er elsewhere, but hero yields prolificul lv. The Huerro Hose and the great de Anion pear trees ait n ill their highost excellence. For three years past the latter nverimed nearly $4 per box with no expense at harvest time snve picking and packing. Peaches tin v rogulurly from $100 u per acre, the hilllops furnishing ideal peach lands. The cherry is at home, and the nppe vallev of tho liogue has made a nam f,,r itself with this delicious fruit. The ercnt canning cherry, tho lloyal Anne, is very popular and its production is r.'-pidly increasing. The Blenheim aprieo!, often a shy bearer, succeeds here, nnd has no bet tor representative in nnv country. It can safely bo chosen ns n money-maker, heinir oonular everywhere. The Tokay and Concord grape have been tried liere. and the hill lands are admirably suited, giving color and fin vor. There is no renson why many Enronenn varieties should not thrive nn these low foothills, the climate be ing drv, the air free from humidity and the rainfall slight. Markets and the Future, Oregon produced last, yenr apples to the value of $l,t.l.SOO, dried prunes worth $1,203,875, nad other fruits suf ficient to make n total of $4,27i,lS5. This is an increaso of.r3 per cent over the crop of 1000, and at the present rate of planting it will take but n few vears to reach a value of .f.iU.OOO.OUU. A market for Oregon apples is found in the east, in England. Scotlnnd, an (lermanv, nnd is being developed across tho Pacific, several thousand boxes bo- inir sent nnnuallv to Vladivostok Will production outrun tho market! Hardlv. A hopeful sign of the times is the increasing consumption or fruit Fruit Lands and Prices. Iinmedint.lv around Medford first clas lands readv for the plow can he bought for $130 and ?A0 per acre, with an upward slant an me nmr. ., not lnnd eounllv good can bo bought f, 100. nnd a little farther out for . It is a matter of distance from the railroad rather than of the quality of the land or of water for irrigation There are bottom lands of black loam King along the Regno and other moun tain streams, and hill slopes which are not onlv fertile, but where the rod cneeked Spit takes or. a deep. dark, splendid rid, and with the yellow New town T'ippin, makes a bouquet of color on the table. These lands have beea tri.il. and it is known exactly what they will do. and transportation will take euro of itself if a district so developed is nwny from tho railroad. A Sportsmen's Land. For tho true hunter nnd fishermna the woods and streams about Medford nro a paradise. Quail, grouse. Chinese pheasnnts, dnck nnd snipo nrc near by; black tailed deer are in tho mountains, and farther back in the less frequented rgioni the black and cinnamon bear are plentiful. A few silvertips may also tie found, and cougars, gray fox and the coyote. Kogue river is a fine trout stream and as compared with Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine and Canada woods and streams, the fisherman who also a philosopher and a lover of the great and beautiful will greatly profer these western wilds. The fact tliat hero he caa count on the weather, that the days nre not rainy, the nights not muggy, and the streams not infest ed with gnats and mosquitoes, adds im mensely to the enjoyment. It takes a good deal of enthusiasm or grim reso lution to whip a trout stream and fight lusects every instant, nnd then return to camp only to find a cloud of mos quitoes waiting your advont. Fishing uvolvea toil, but it should mean en joyment and not battle, and when the charm of these Pacific coast streams is understood, tho east will scud many a representative of a noble brotherhood try for trout aud snlmou in these hills. Shall It bo an orchard in tho vallev, with tho scent of blossoms, the aroma the ripe fruit, and visions of ducats. or n tont by the laughing stream, the campfire with its pungent fragrance, and a trout broiled in the coals; a bed of boughs, the morning bath, and leis ure to find yourself in the tranquil solitudes of the forest, away from the friction of civilized conditions! Happy the man who can havo both the orchard and the tent in tho forest! JACKSONVILLE ITEMS. J Henry Barnoburg and wife of Ash- and nro visiting friends living in Jack sonville A. H. William Tonningtf Bryan has issued the following statement: "The election IiiTh gone against us by decisive majority. Tho returns are not all in, and it is impossible nt present to analyze them or to sav what causes con tributed most to tlve republican victory. We made our fight upon a platform which embodies what wo believed to be good for the American people, but it is for tho people themselves to decide what laws thev desire nnd what meth- m 1 1 mi i mi. i HJf J . faith that the pnbueitv which we asked i for will vet commend itself to tho Amer ican people, that the election of sena tors by the people will be secured, that tho iniquities of tho trusts will arouse an opposition that will result in the imination of the principle of private monopoly. I am confident that the peo ple will see the necessity for the labor legislation and the tariff reduction which our platform demanded. T am entirely satisfied with Mr. Mack as the chairman and with the members of the co'mmittee, T do not see what fVy could have done more than they did. and ns for myself, T put forth every effort in my power to secure victory for our cause. The nom ination came from the hands of the voters. T have obeyed their oemmand aud led as best T could. Words will not express my gratitude for the devotion which has lnen shown by millions of democrats during tho past 12 years. In this hour of national defeat Ij find some consolation in the cordial support given by my neighbors, by the citizens of Lincoln, nnd by the people if Hie state of Nebraska.
