tdilerable interest was manifested here
today when it was left rued that the new
Sierra cntolT of the Southern Pacific
railroad over the Trutkce mountains
would pUMH within a few yards of the
cabin occupied by the Itreen family,
ineuibers of the ill-fated Dormer party
that perished near Donner lake. The
survey for the cutoff had been made by .
railroad engineers to reduce some of
the steep grades and difficult curves
in the Tnickee divisiou. and when the'
survey to locate I lie Itreen cabin was
made by another part vol' engineers a
few davs ago it was discovered that 1
it had stood within a few yards of the
proposed line of railroad. '
I. K. IJreeii, son of Kdward P. IJreen. ;
who was a member of the Donner par- j
ty and who lived in the cabin in tliatj
terrible period S2 years ago, arrived
here late lust night from the mountains,
where he had been wit ll n surveying
party. When the general, C. F. Mc- I
Clashed, of the survivors of the ill-fat- j
ed Donner expedition, his daughter,
Miss .June I,. Mcdlaslien, and Will in in
Thompson, a Southern Pacific engineer
who volunteered his services, he located
tiie acre of ground on which the Hreen j
cabin stood, which has been given to 1
(he state for a monument.
An immense wooden cross formerly
marked the spot where so many of the
Donui r party died, but this was wreck
ed by the storms, stone monument
will be erected.
