A TAIXTED WATER SUPPLY .
T1k discovery of Imcilli coli coniniuuis in tin- water
of Little Butte by Dr. Ralph Mattson of Portland, state
bacteriologist, is ii matter of the gravest concern to M"ed
fnvd It means that the state board of health will forbid
the use of the water for domestie purposes unless filtered.
This is the supply contemplated under the Hamilton prop
osition. ' '
The water from wliich the test was made was taken
from the main channel of the north fork of the Little Butte
at Hanley ford, where there is a swift current near where
it is proposed to divert the city's supply. A sterilized
bottle was filled bv Dr. E. B. Pickel, member of the state
board of health, October 27). The bottle was packed in
ice and shipped to the state bacteriologist.
This is the first bacteriological test that nnv water from
this section has been submitted to, and the result is start
ling. This bacilli comes from the intestinal canal of ani
mals and humans, and provides favorable conditions foi
typhoid. This discovery of this germ in the water of Ku-
geno was followed by an epidemic of typhoid, over :()
persons being stricken.
The Mail, ignorant of the fact that chemical anil bacte
rial analysis differ, says:
"No effort of any physician to create a feeling of dis
trust in the waters of the north fork of Little Butte will
avail at this late date. Before this "campaign" was begun
the chemist of the Universitv of California and the chemist
of the agricultural college at Corvallis pronounced the wa
ters of Little Hutte of 'excellent quality.' "
William T. Ecdgwick, Ph. D., professor of biology and
lecturer upon sanitary science and the public health for
the Massachusetts institute of tecnology, a well known au
thority, says:
"It is an interesting fact that in laboratory experiments
it, is possible to introduce into distilled water a number of
pathogenic bacteria without producing any effect upon
T,ne water discoverable nv rue most refined chemical anal
ysis."
Three hundred thousand dollars is too high a price to
pay for a tainted water supply.

RESULT OF ELECTIOX.
13ig stick, buncombe and boodle have won another na

the protected trusts is perpetuated for another four years.

ago, has sold its birthright again for the promise of a mess
of pottage from those who blasted its prosperiay.
Once every four years the country is saved or is sen
liellwards. it all depends upon the point of view. Mean
while most of us have to work to eat, no matter who gets
the offices or the graft from protective tariff. The dan
ger is that the eating will soon cost more than we get for
the work.
Tf the election proves anything, it is that I'ncle Jo(
