L. Hamilton, is but little better than a frog pond. It is 11 narrow stretch of water varying from 100 to 200 or 'MM yards ia width, perhaps two miles long, full of decaying bigs, willows, tules nnd submerged trees, most of which have been killed by inundation. It will be necesHary to filter the water before it will be fit for use by the city. Originally the lake was a shallow pool, flooding a mountain, meadow, fed from lava rock springs whose source is apparently in the melting snows of Mt. Pitt. Tho upper end of the lake has a white sand bottom. On account of the shallowness of the water (not more than four or five feet in the deepest part) the water becomes very warm during the summer months, discolored along the lake shores, and cam pern find it necessary to go to the upper end of the lake to secure water fit for drink ing. The shores of the lake are very flat, and since the construction of the dam the water has backed up, submerg ing vegetation that grew along the banks. 1 Dam a Temporary Structure. The dam constructed by the Fish Lake company is a flimsv affair and likely to go out nt any time. It is not over fen feet in height, with 0 waste gate in the center. It is said to have been built around a fallen trep, from which planks were driven into the ground and backed up with rock. The dam is constructed in a gorge some dis tance below the original lake and backs water up for several feet above the lerel of the old lake. The photogrnphs which were taken recently show the lake ns it is today, full of decaying vegetation, drift og, dead trees and brush. There are many ducks upon the lake, and the little plant called "duck food" is growing in abundance in the water. During the latter part of the summer months a green tenm floats upon a THANFROGPOND LAKE HALF A MILE ABOVE DAM BAND TO PLAY; BOB TO SPEAK: Democrats to Close Local Campaign In Tremendous Outburst of Enthusiasm The democrats will close their cam paign in Medford this ovening in a rousing rally, at which Bob Smith, Ore- gnu's most eloquent orator, will be :ln) principal speaker. Tho band will play and the democrats will allow their pent up enthusiasm to give vent to it self. The news from the great political battlefields of the east has been such lately as to give great hope to the local admirers of the Commoner and they will turn out in great numbers tonight to take part in the final rally of the local campaign. The valley of the north fork-of Lit tle Hutte is an immense cow pasture, and over 10u(l head of cattle are win tered in its drainage area. There are three cattle ranches above flantey 's, n sawmill, nnd a favorite camping place ( McAllister Springs, located on railroad land), where many people spend the summer months, f'attle pas ture along the lake. Snow Is driving them down from the heights. It is the Fish Lake Ditch company announced intention to eventually clear the hike basin by removing the tim ber up to the .10 foot contour. There is nothing, however, in Mr. Hamilton's proHisnl to the city to guarantee such clearance, nnd there is no way in which it could be enforced. ROUSING RALLY FLOATING LOOS, DEAD TKEES.
