alng In Morning Paper on
s Water Proposition
; (Central Point Herald.)
The Mfdford Morning Mail in a re
cent rditorial objects to the Herald ox-
presaing nu opinion regarding tlio sev
ernl water proposuls which are to be
voted cn by the electors of that city
within a few days. Jt also objects to
similar expressions from two citize
of Qrauts Pass.
Since when did it become improper
for any. citizen of the lioguo River
valley to refrain from expressing an
opinion regarding any project which is
intended to mako for the development
of the valley as a whole! 1
After accusing "Bob Smith and ex-
Judgo Hale of Grants Pass nnd the
Cnetral Point Herald" of "telling
Met U ford people how they should vote
on the water question," the Mail con
tinues: "My, but these neighboring
tuwns have all at oneo become desper
ately interested in our wellbeing. Those
two towns always did love Medford,
etc., etc., thereby attempting to give
the impression that t'cntrnl Point nnd
Grants Pass people havo an ulterior
purpose in advocating lioguo river -as
tt source of water supply tor tlm val
ley and of desiring to see Medfnnl tie
herself up to some water proposition
which would ultimately result to her
disadvantage and retard the growth of
that town.
Mail si Narrow-Minded.
, Such a view of n question of this
kind is actuated by a spirit which is
the direct opposite of what is required
to build up and develop tho latent. re
aources of the Rogue lliver valley." If
the Mail was as broad-minded a news
paper as it might bo it would be able
to grasp the fact that tho future pros
perity of Mcdford in list necesoarily de
pend on the development of the sur
rounding valley. The Herald, an well
as a majority of tho people of Central
Point, realizes that whatever is a bene
fit to nny section if tho valley is n
benefit to Central Point. Wo winh to
ee Medford become a city of f0,or)0
people, because whilo Medfnrd is at
taining that sizo Central Point will
certainly breomo n place of 500(1 or
000, o Woo versa, and it is bocause
tho Herald sincerely desires to see, such
development that it takes a friendly
interest in the welfare of spctions of
tho valley without the corporato limits
of its own town, oven at tho risk of
being further "called down" by the
Mail.
Next to securing fire protection and
decent drinking water for tho Bplomlid
town they have already built, it appears
to the Herald to bo of most importance
to Medford peoplo to encourage the de
velopment of the surrounding country
in order that their town may continue
to grow nnd prosper. This can best be
done w assisting some project which
promises to furnish water for irrigation
of the orchard and garden land of tho
Valley. This the Condor company prom
ises k do if their water proposition
is accepted by Medford, nnd it is an
undisputed fact that a pumping propo
sition can cover an immense area of
our very best fruit Rinds which can
never be reached by any existing or
projected ditch, proposition. It is true
"that the Fish Lndte companj has a ditch
covering a portion of the vnlley, but it
is also true that needec extensions of
that system are not being mnde as rap
idly as the development of the country
demands, the reason given by many
land owners in this section being that
tho terms are not such ns they can af
ford to accept. It would nppenr, then,
than another company supplying water
for irrigation might hnvo an excellent
effect in the adjustment of water rntos
n a basis that farmers and orchard
ists could afford to pny. This phase
of tho question, the Herald believes,
is of great importance to the future
growth of Medford, as well as of all
other portions of the vnlley, and is
worthy the serious consideration of
every man who has a voto to cast at
tho water election.
The Mail should look beyond its cor
porato limits and its personal prefer
ence once in a while, and above all
things it should no longer attempt,
even by insinuation, as is apparent in
this instance, to keep alive the senseless,
old-time jealousies and bickerings
bickerings which have in the past done
so much to make life both unpleasant
and unprofitable, as measured by what
it should be, in this nature-favored val
ley. ADVERTISED LETTER LIST.
