THE W ATE It PltOULHAL
It is too soon in Hits campaign for people to form dei'i
nite opinions upon the various water propositions before
the city. AIL should be investigated, the merits tiiid demer
its of each discussed before determining how to cast the
ballot.
All of the propositions were made in good faith. Much
has a certified check of $f000 to insure its good faith. Kadi
has its merits and demerits, and what will really be best
in the long run for Medford, what will insure it the most
eventually, is the question to be considered.
The Medford Mail, which in its customar) unfairness,
has never even printed the three propositions as made to
the city, but confined itself to one proposition, the Fish
Lake, which it announces itself for editorially, has en
gaged in a campaign of detraction of the Crater Lake Lum
ber company's proposal, and the Condor Water & I'ower
company's proposal, either of which means more to the
city and country than tiie Fish Lake proposition. The
copies of the Mail containing these attacks arc being dis
tributed gratis to insure something the Mail cannot legiti
mately supply circulation.
Whenever the notorious Denver I'ost starts in to black
mail a proposition, it runs a column headed "80 the People
May Know' in which under the pretense of fairness, the
object under assault is venomously assailed. .Borrowing
this idea and title, for it originates nothing, the Medford
Mail ran a similar column against the proposed Blakcley
streetcar franchise, which had many things in its favor,
none of which were mentioned. It is now attacking, with
out even the semblance of fair play, the Dig Untie Springs
proposition and the Jvogue River proposition.
The public can judge for itself of Liu; capacity of the
Mail for settling the water problem satisfactorily. J t stood
in with the majority of the water committee in its policy
of secret! veuess and its atenipL to purchase! Wassoji canyon
with its insufficient flow. If .Fish lake water was the
right system, why did the water committee and the Mail
turn it down for a semi-arid canyon and waste all the
golden months of summer Jf Fish lake water was too
poor in quality all spring and summer for various consid
erations as a source of supply, why is it so meritorious now If
If the Dig Dutte Springs proposition is accepted, it
means the establishment of a large lumber plant with a
big payroll for both city and county, the opening up ol
the timber belt and increased growth and development. It
also means the finest water in the world for Medford. II
the Rogue River pumping proposition is accepted, it means
the creation of an extensive irrigation system, the placing
d J0,UU0 acres oi the finest truit land in the valley under
irrigation, and a material addition to the productiveness
and wealth of city and county. It also means an ample
supply of the finest filtered water for the city.
If the I'ish lake proposition is accepted, it means 1215
inches of water from Fish lake for Medford and that is
all that it means. Jt means the expenditure- of 234,100,
most of it outside the county with foreign pipe houses.
No industry is fostered, no country developed.
The Rogue River proposition costs approximately
(contractors bid) 1!)7,S00. The Fish lake ditch propo
sition costs .f2H,i00. The Big Dutte Springs proposition
costs, flume $110,000, pipe, etc. (contractors bid;, $ 1 "-.-MU;
total 262,410.

signs of this character about Medford. We
always find a desirable tenant before a good
building has been "to let" more than 24
hours, and land owners know we can always
find a purchaser if a reasonable valuation is
put on property. Consequently Medford
does not impress the homeseeker as being
"under the hammer." This is as it should
