LISBON, Portugal, Oct. 1". Twenty
three men were killed or mortally
wounded and 40 were seriously injur.al
iu a great riot at Azambuja, between
the monarchists mid republicans l:t the
municipal election primaries today.
The rcpubliccns outnumbered the
monarchist and were the ugrcscors in
iho fight. After a struggle iu -the
streets, the monarchists were put to
flight and took refuge in u chuuh, bar--iimliug
the doors and windows.
The republicans then obtained heavy
,.osts and limbers, with which they
niiide battering rams. With these they
battered down the doors and with stones
broke all the windows that were expos
iil, When the doors were broken open
the mob rushed into tho church and at
tempted to massacro the monarchists.
A bloody battle was fought uiuk-r Un
roof of the sanctuary, in whieh knives
and guns were ur,ed with deadly eftect.
The monarchis'.s, having no means of
retreat, fought desperately until the ar
rival of tho troops. The soldierB ar
rested a number of tho leaders and
finally restoied ordor.
The town is under martial law, as
the authori-ies fear further trouble
