MEDFORD DAILY TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER II, 1908. OREGON FRUIT IS GOMPERS PUIS CIRCULAR State: Board ol Hortlcul-j Labor Partisan to a Prin ture Meets in Portland- Gipal, and Not to Any 1908 Crop is Good Political Party PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 14. Several important elements of interest to the fruitgrowing industry the fourth in ice in the state develop. at the semi annual meeting of the stneo board of horticulture Among them was the sounding of the death knell of the cod ling .moth, whoBe eompleto extermina tion in this state was prncticnlly pre dicted 4a' the biennial report of Presi dent '.W.t K. Newell; another was the prediction that in a few years the fruit markets-of the orient will have been developed to such a degree that it will exhaust the fruit industry of the entire Pacific northwest to satisfy the demand. Still another was the showing by reports-from the different district commissioners that acre for aero Ore gen will produce more net revenue in applene, pears, peaches and grapes than any other class of farming by the use of' modern methodB and proper skill. Ajsothec was the fact that Oregon ap ples, under present highly developed mathods of culture, aro eliminating com petition of eastorn products, where two and one-half bushel barrels of this fruit are bringing lower prices than single boxes do in this Btate. 1908 Crop Good. It was brought out at the meeting that the 1!)08 fruit crop would about hold itB'-own with the inonrd-brenkiiip; yield of 1907, when the total value of the product in all lines was $4,27.1,000, as 'estimated by President Newell. A number of conditions have contributed tor-holding the money value of the out puf down,- and at the Bnme time it may appear when the crops aro all har vested that last year's figures may be largely 'exceeded. Mr. Newell. and his district commissioners were loth to give any .Jetailed estimates at this time on that grounds that whatever estimates they might make would be merely guess work, but when it is considered that the. aluo of Oregon fruit for commerc ial tiBe has increased from $1,400,00 in 1900 to $4,000,000 in 1907, all members of the board regard it as a remarkable showing that 1908 should hold its own. Ono of the conditions that figure in the totals is the great slump in the dry prune pack. Last year tho pack was 25,450,000, valued at 1,20S,0(IO, while thiB year it wil not go in excess of 17, 500,000 with nn cverngo price of nut far from 5 cents. This is only a two tUrd crop, and will cut the value of the entire fruit crop of tho state down pretty close to 10 per cent. Shortage in Peaches Big shortages aro also noted in the reports from all sections in the pencil and ptnr crops, the value of these two crops last year being considerably in excess of $300,000. As against this there, has been light yield in most classes of fruit, but with tho increased acreage and a marked stiffening in the apple market just now taking effect the averngo of last year is likely to be maintained, but it will devolve upon the apple districts and the small fruit sections to make good tho deficiency. Even! tho financinl unpleasantness of lasttfnll had a depressing effect on the fruit market, as shown by reports read. But tho situation is most promising in all lines," say the commissioners, for the acreage is steadily increasing, and relentleB warfare being waged agninst codling moths, scale, scab, all forms of fnugus disease and other pests in bring ing -splendid results. The board is con fident that the moth wil be practi cally eliminated as a mennco to the fruit culturist if the present policy is continued. Chief points in President Newell 's report-were: Eastern districts show a better crop than western and southern. There is more spraying with better re sults. The peach crop ia the Rogue Dive valley is vory large. Open fires and-smudffca havo helped greatly gainst oarly frosts. ITood River and the Qmnd Rondo havo full crops of high quality aples, but only a two-third crop of prunes. Eastern buyers tried toiforco consignments of apples, but one buyer broko the corner nnd the prices are soaring. He urged Hint grow ere pack nothing but tho very bout np pies -end to sell the culls to the cider mill fir pig trougn. 'In performing a solemn duty at this time in support of a political party, la bor does not become partisau to a po litical party but a partisan to princi ple," declared Presideat Gompers of the American Federation Labor in a circular issued regarding labor's atti tude in the campaign . He charges that the republican party and its candidates stand for further extending into this country a despotic government vested in tho judiciary and that the demo cratic party and its candidates &tand for government bv law vested ia the peo- pie. ; Tho circular is addressed to "Men of labor, lovers of hiiniaa liberty," and says ill "part: "Tho judicinry, induced by corpora tions nnd trusts and protected by the republican party, is step by step de stroying government by law : ad sub stituting therefore a government by judges, who determine what, in their opinion is wrong, what is evidenco, who iH guilty and whnt tho punish ment shall be. This revolution is de priving the workers of their rights as citizens and will inevitably bo made applicablo to the business men later. This virus nnd poison has ill several instances invaded upon the legislative fields by mnkiug laws which may be enforced by equity process. Despotic power under the ermine is ns danger ous as despotic power nndor the crown." The circular refers to Judgo Tnft as "the originator and specific champion of discretionary government," : and (iompors reiterates that "thero is no political office ia the gift of tho Amer ican people, elective or appoiativ", that under any circumstances I would ac cept. PORTLAND WILL NOT DROP OUT OF COAST LEAGUE SAN FRANCISCO, Cul., Oct. 14. The Pacific Const league will be made up of six clubs next season nnd all the taTk about eight teams or the possibil ity Pol Hand running out nnd join ing forces with the Northwestern league dnesoiut go. This comes right off the .bat from President Ewing, and when he spoke the other day, he declared his utterances were voicing tho sentiments of the other officers and magnates of the league. Ewing has abandoned his idea of forc ing Manager Ibigdnle of Seattle into line, nnd instead of attempting to fight him, Ewing will enter into an agree aient with him whereby a big combin ation will be brought off in tho year 1910. According to Ewing, Dugdale has agreed to this. When the big deal has b.-eti made, the hopes of Ewing will have been realized nnd the Pacific Coast league circuit will comprise eight clubs five California teams and three in the northwest. At present Seattle is sure to break in, while both Tacomn and Spokane have a chalice with the odds about even up. Christian Church News.
