Probably the most remarkable cxjierienco in tho his tory of ballooning was reported toilav by N. Tf. Armdd, tho pilot and If. 0. , (lewat, assistant pilot of the balloon St. Louis, one of the three American entrants in the international race for tho Bennett cup, when they were hind-1 ed at C'uxhaven, after having fallen into the north sea at midnight. lue two Americans were enveloped in the folds of the great gas bag, which was being lashed by the waves when a searchlight from the steamer Laugerood happened to rest roou tho great dark bjeet, which attracted the attention of tlio lookout. When it was seen that men wero iu danger of drowning a small boat was pyt out and the aero nauts were rescued, though not until they were aboard tho ship were they :ible to make it clear to the rescuers how they happened to be out in the middle of the sea floating on a great loose bundle of canvass. Under Water Twice. " Both men undoubtedly would have been drowned in a few minutes if they had not fallen within range of the light of tho passing steamer. They already had been under tho wnter oneo or twice and wero struggling blindly with no hope of escaping death in the water, when the sudden gleam of the search light brought aid. The men had no idea they wero over the ocean, as there was a heavy fog They were traveling at n rapid rate of speed, but were going along comfort ably and without thought of danger, when a rapid fall of the temperature eapst.ed (he balloon. The big bag began to rapidly descend. The pilot and his assistant threw out ballast, but at about midnight they realized that they would go down rap idly and that throwing out bntflast seemed to have little effect. Cut Looso Basket It was pitch dark, when suddenly they heard the roaring of the waves below nnd realized their horrible pre dicament. In desperation, they were cutting loose the basket in hope the bag would tli'ii float, and they cling to the rigging, when they struck the water. The aeronauts telegraphed to the race committee that they were unhurt, giv ing an account of their thrilling expe rience. The last heard of the St. Louis before tho accident was when she passed over Cnlnu nt. H):"iO o'clock vesterdav morn ing. ").") miles southwest of Frankfort-on-Odor. The balloon was then travel ing in a southwesterly direction, but the wind changed nnd drove the balloon with great speed town rd the Nort h sea. Grants Pass Canning Company Grants Pass, Or. John I). Very interesting services were held it the Christian church nt both hours if worship. The large chorus led by M r. Kdmeads rendered several splen did hymns in creditable manner, which were much appreciated by those present. No one can listen to Mr. Kdmeads' solos without being moved to desire a better life. Those who love to hear good singing may find it nt the Chris tian church. The morning subject, "Who Ts On the Lord's Side?" was listened to by an appreciative audience. Tlio evening sub ject was "What Ts a Man" Worth!" The spenker said in part: "The world is accustomed to estimate man's worth by his material posses sions, l ho true standard or measure ment is not money, but moral and spirit ual worth. Find out what estimate an's Creator puts upon his creature. In the estimation of Clod, man is worth more than an entire world. Notice the estimate that a mother puts upon her babe. You might lay all the world nt her feet in exchange for her babe, but she would spurn your offer. 'Man's own estimate of his worth is sometimes very great, but never great enough. Many throw nway their op portunities for development, growth and moral and spiritual culture, think ing only of the sensuous, the material. All of man's powers should be saved for Christ. Man has power to reason, to will, to decide between right and wrong, finite spirit or soul power, and find 's image, although much marred. All these powers should be brought under the subjection of (lod should be saved for Christ. Christ was the highest type of man. Hod's final estimate of man's worth was shown in the vicarious suf ferings and death of Jesus, the Christ. No greater demonstration could be giv- , yet many do not value their life ns rth saving."
