Crater Lake PEINE VILLE, Or., Oct. 10. United States geological Hurveyors, captained by Xi. 1 Biggs, reached hero today aft er a long journey overland from Ash land. The party came by way of the mountains to Upper Klamath lake, Fort Klamath, Klamath marsh, Koslaud and bend, concludin their journey at the Crook county courthouse. From here they will, take wagon back to Ashland, where the line they ran found its in ception. Elevations of the surface have been taken every mile, the altitude in each case being marked on u stake driven into the. ground. Each stake bears this legend: 'U. 8. GeoJogicul Survey, $250 fine for meddling with this plate." Iu some instances, especially in the cities and towns, brass-topped stakes were firmly implanted in rock walls, show ing the altitude. The geological surveyors visited the world -renowned Crater lake, finding the elevation at the water's edgo to be t177 feet. Vhoro the trail drops over the crater's edge abovo the sharp descent to the water's edge the elevation above sea level is 7070 feet. At one plaee where there is a sheer drop of 12000 feet to the water, though off tho road, the altitude is 81777 feet. Other eleva tions mapped out by the federal crew are.; Klamath lake, at wator's edge, 4139 foet; Fort Klamath 4180, Klam ath Marflh 4529, Beover marsh 4 (HO, Odell 4453, Roslaud 4220, Paulina creek at Caldwell ranch 419Q, W. P. Vundo vert ranch 4182, Fred Shonquest place 4172, Lava Butte road at bnso of butte 4507, Bend 3G2fl. Prinovillo elevations have not yet boen ascertained, but the supposed nltitude of this city is 2850. The surveyors left Ashland, Or., June 15, thus consuming more than three months in their painstaking task. BUTTE FALLS ITEMS. Alex indcr, passed away Sunday afternoon it her home in Central Point aged 21 years, 11 months anil llo days. Who was born in Chanutn, Kan., Novem ber 10, 1880. She came to Oregon to visit with relatives about two years igo, and later her father disposed of his business in Kansas nnd removed his family to this place.
