MEDFORD DAILY TRIBUN15, MEDFORD, K'K(i()X, KUIDAV, OCTOBER 2, 1908.
rltOOSEVELT CONTINUES TO
AID THE COMMONER'S CAUSE
(Sacramento Bee.)
President Roosevelt ia a rendy and
prolific letter writer. He has jumped
into tniB campaign with the evident
..mnae of being IT, leaving a secun.
ary and very inconspicuous position to I ""' were it nut for the pub
Bi personally anuoiuted candidate, Wil
liam 11. i an.
President Roosevelt is iu many re
spects a marvelous man. The country
owes him a great deal. It owes him a
debt of gratitude for many things he
did as president and for ninny more
things ho attempted to do.
But, like all great men, Roosevelt
has many a fault. Not the least among
them is a conspicuous blindness to the
great qualities of anybody to whom he
is opposed, and an equally total obliv
ion to the demerits of any men or any
doctrine for which he combats.
When Roosevelt goes into a fight, he
goes into it like an enraged bull, with
his head down and his eyes shut. And
so when the president rushes to the
protection and the championship of the
nomineo who is but a cuckoo voice, like
the same enraged bull ho offers a prom
inent broadside to tho enemy.
But while Roosevelt denounees and
even vituperate Bryan on account of
Haskell who has gotten out of the
democratic national committee on the
ground thnt a man in his position should
be, like Caesnr's wife, above suspicion
he never had a word to say about
T. Coleman Du Pont, head of the pow
der trust, who hnd full and supreme con
trol of the republican speakers, and
against whose organization cases nr.
now pending for robbing the United
States government and for breaking it
laws.
T. Coleman Du Pout, has retired "for
tho good of the cause;" but his retire
ment still leaves the financial and exe
cutive committees of the national re
publican party honeycombed with trust
officials like William N'elson Cromwell,
who represents the Ilnrrininii interests:
the sugar trust and the Standard Oil:
and Frank O. Lowden, the vice-president
of the Pullman Palace Cur com
puny; and with gross corrupt ieiiists like
Bois Penrose of Pennsylvania, a suc
cessor to Boss Quay a boss of I In
corrupt political machine in I'hila.lel
phia and Pennsylvania, which is a
greater stencil in the nostrils of honest
citizens thnn nny political machine since
tho days of Boss Tweed in Xew York.
Nor" is Roosevelt at all fair in con
trusting the attitude of Bryan to lias
kell, which was simply that of a man
who would not kick nnothcr man with
out just cause, with the alleged ntti
tnde of Taft to Fornker.
Tho president dwells on the state
went that Taft would rather not be
president than to enter into a combina
tion to help Fornker to become sena
tor. But he did enter into a combina
tion to help Fornker along in his po
litical ambitions. He called upon Fnr
akcr to assist him, and the two shook
i. a a .,,,1 h,., -nine nolitieal allies, all
through the indui-iice and good offices
of Boss Cox, the corruptionist of Ohio.
They had made arrangements to cam
paign together, and they would be earn-
lientiou of the Standard Oil lette
rs to
And yet Itoosevelt, in a letter the
other day. ileride, Brvim for not know
ing that Haskell was a bad man, and
he admitted that Taft knew all that
Forak.-r wasti f..r he declared it to be
"a matter of common notorietv."
He places his cuck'nt proxy iu a very
had light, then. For if Taft kliew be
fore tile presidential iiominat ion what
Roosevelt declares lie knew, how can.
Taft reconcile it with a lioos-veltian
eolwri.-nee that he united himself with
l-'oraker for political purposes, and
would have been united with him yet
had it not been for the exposure?
Hut the most glaring and ridiculous
tiling ill til- present exhibition of
Roosevelt as a very ready letter writ
er is his refusal of the proposal made
hyb llrvuil that the republican party
adopt tlie plan adopted by the demo
cratic party to publish all campaign
contributions prior to election.
Roosevelt has air. ady charged that
the trusts are working for Bryan. Illy
ail's books will all be open long before
election day. Roosevelt says Taft 's
hooks will not I pene.l. He admits
that the trusts furnish great funds to
the republican party, but that the re
publican party, throi'oli himself, show
ed those contributions had no effect in
outlining the policy of the adaliuist ra
tion. He admits that the trusts huanced
i he iiliernaloi ial campaign of Hughes
of New York, but lie says also that
Hughes has done his duty regardless
of the fact.
Yet In- nrjiins that Ci-vim furnishes
leasnn for refusin-.- to t t the pro-
publicity beeause "to adopt
..sal would give to every man

nrii-isely the arguments that
