MEDFORD DAILY TRIBUNE MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, SKPTKMUKK IS. 190S.
PLANNING TO CONNECT TBE
CRATER LAKE- ROAD WITH
CALIFORNIA'S STATE HIGHWAY
(Portland Telegram.)
Important to Oregon from the outset
the Crater Lake to Klamath Falls road
enterprise now assumes the nature of an
interstate project, the highway com
mission appointed by Governor Cham
berlain ascetraining yesterday that con
nection of Oregon's proposed road with
the state road of California, for which
$3,000,000 has been appropriated, is
feasible. Immediate steps will be tak
en to confer with authorities of the
Golden state to the end that California
and Oregon may collaborate and
through their joint offorta perfoct what
may rightfully bo termed a boulevard
from Ilarriman's rotreat at Pelican Bay
to the city of millionaires, Pasadena,
nino miles from Los Angeles.
"Xo greater enterprise has ever been
lathered," said Judge George T. Bald
win yesterday, "and the possibilities
are so vast it is impossible for Oregon
to measure its worth."
While the connection of Oregon's pro
posed road with California's through
Btate highway is a feature of the delib
erations of the highway commission, it
is not as yet uppermost in the minds
of the road enthusiasts. With them act
ual construction of Oregon 's road is
foremost; when it is complete its union
with California's highway will be but
a small task.
Canvass Is Begun.
Today letters are being sent out by
Will G. Steel, secretary of the high
way commission, to all tho county courts
of Oregon, to all business mno, auto
mobilists and others to enlist their aid
in carrying the road project to success,
to attain which a large fund vill be
necessary. The highway commission fig
ures $500,000 will suffice to mako tho
Crfator Lake-Klamalh Falls road. Jack
son county will bo asked to contribute
$50100, Klamath county ia scheduled
to donate a similar sum, and in the
next session of tho legislnturo a bill
will bo introduced asking an appropri
ation of $100,000 for the project. In
terstate subscription is relied on to
provide- a fitting sum, and congress
will be asked for aid worthy of Uncle
Sam's bounty in providing for national
park highways.
To further perfect the highway com
mission's plan of action, a number of!
the members of that body will meet in !
Med ford September 22 to confer with
tho county court of Klamath county
and tho council of Klamath. Then the
aims of the commission will be set forth i
in detail, canvass plans will be discuss
STBENTTOUS POLITICAL DAY
1 IN YREKA SATURDAY ,
YREKA, Cal., Sept. 18. Tomorrow j
promises to be a very strenuous day in .
this little burg, politically speaking. At.
10 o'clock in the morning tho repub
lican county convention will bo called
to order in Peters' theater. The pros- ,
peets are that the gathering will bo j
well attended, as most of the precincts j
throughout the county held primaries
and elected delegates. Tho convention j
will not have a large amount of work,
and will probably finish its business
during the day.
In tho nfternoon tho democratic pri
maries will be held, which will keep
that party busy until late in the day.
Tn tho evening Hon. Theodore Bell is
billed to speak on the political issues of
the day. It is stated that Yreka is one
of the few places at which he will speak
in California, and it is tho intention of
the democracy to give him a grand send
off. Lots of red fire and plenty of
music is promised on the occasion, and
there will, no doubt, be a large crowd
in attendance. After the whirlwind of
pulitical doings has passed, there will
be a calm until the following Saturday,
when the democratic convention will be
held here.
Siskiyou county seems to bo more
than prominent in national politics this
election as she was called upon to fur
nish a presidential elector on both na
tional tickets. W. B. Shearer of Yreka
is on the democratic ticket and Dr.
G. W. Dwinell of Montaglo is on the
republican.

LARGE ATTENDANCE IN
CENTRAL POINT SCHOOLS
School opened Monday morning in
the fine nrw. school building with a
total of 230 pupils in attendance. This
shows a large increase of pupils since
lnt vear. the first Anv'm fmrnllmpnt
livn being but 173, or 57 less than the
present attendance. Everything indi
entps a successful term for the coming
year, and every patron of the school
and citizen of the district should lend
hi shearty cooperation to the teachm
and school officers with a view to hav
ing the Central Point school second to
none in the county or state. Herald.

Haxri man's Choice Tells.
"The importance of this monster en
terprise cannot be realized," said Judge
Baldwin, "by people who hare not seen
tho virgin country which the proposed
road is to traverse. Ilarrim&n, with
the whole United States to choose from,
selected Pelican Bay as his retreat;
that honor tells more than anything
elso the worth of the countrv. Trav
elers realise the value of the Klamath
aud Jackson country moro than those
who are in the midst of its fresh air
and unparalleled water. Passing mil
lionaires have over tho view the coun
try offers, and over the water, which
no other place in the United States can
excel.
While Kul inn tli and Jackson coun
ties will be particularly benefited by
the proposed road, tho project will be
a national aid, and will do more to
advertise this part of tho world than
any other improvement. California lauds
its inland and seasido resorts in the
highest terms, but tourists fresh from
Golden state retreats go in raptures
over Crater lake aad Klamath falls.
The road we propose will open up the
country. It will induce capitalists to
invest, and in time tourists will select
Oregon's garden spot for their resting
periods in preference to any other
resort be it located north, south, east
or west.
To Be 130 Miles Long.
"The road, as planned, will be about
130 miles long, and will course up the
Rogue river to Crater lako, down Crook
canyon, through the Wood river section
to Klamnth Falls, passing along Pelican
Bay lodge, made famous by Harriman.
When Oregon's part of the groat road
building is complete, connection with
California's state road will bo of little
moment. The Oregon road will probably
meet the California highway at Monta
gue. Aside from tho possibility of con
necting with California's road within
the coufines of Oregon, tho road has
brought forth great enthusiasm. As an
example, Medford, though a small city,
contains 100 automobile ownerss each
of whom will not hesitate in subscribing
from $2o to $50 to the road fund.
'The road will be team-proof, owing
to the annual heavy snowfall. Team
traffic for the greater part of the year
will not hurt the highway, and the snow
will protect it nt a time when heavy
travel would be harmful."

HA VINO LOCAL OPTION
SISSQNV Cal., Sept. 18. A petition
which will be taken before the board
of supervisors of Siskiyou county for
a vote on the local option question is
being circulated here. To date about
00 names have been added to it. Some
doubt of what the outcome will be is
felt, since the action taken by the board
of Shasta county a few days ago, when
it turned the proposition down. This is
undoubtedly the beginning of a bitter
tight which will be waged in Siskiyou
county in the near future on tho liquor
question.
