A city can he built up by "boosting" aiul stagnated by
"knocking."
As the result of "knocking," a successful triple attempt
at suicide has heen made in Med ford hy a prospective incr
chant, discouraged by the pessimistic prospects present e
by the knockers.
This merchant came here last spring, was charmed by
city and vaUey, impressed with the opportunities offered
and determined to enter the commercial field. He re
turned, rented a store and purchased a stock.
He lore the stock arrived, the anvil chorus began. Tin
frailly of human nature is such ih;it sometimes a litth
discouraging talk will produce on sensitive minds, des
pondency, despair and insanity.
In this case there was no question
"Whether 'tis nobler
In the. mind to suffer the slings and arrows
Of outrageous fortune, or to take arms
Against a sea of t roubles, and, by opposing,
Knri them."
There was nothing noble about it. The deed was the

Only insanity can explain this desire to flee
inary troubles.
Hut the toiirh needed to topple owr the
reason was supplied by knockers, who, if thev were
tened to, would block all progress in the world.
Those whose conversaf ion cannot reflect a little of tin
sunshine flu Lord has showered on this pleasant vallev
and whose thoughts are not tinged some with the faith and
hope that the beautiful blue howl above symbolizes, had
better keep still, lest the seeds of discouragement they ruth
lessly strew blossom into blood-stained immortelles to deck
the grave of the suicide.

of the owners of young cherry orchards

Many of these who aro doing so prob

country over it has always been the rule
that a very large majority of the fruit
trees are planted to fail of results.
There are always many times the mini
