The superiority of the afternoon newspaper as a news gatherer and a money maker over the niorniiig newspaper has lK)i)ii often proved. Most of the news happens in the day .and the difference in time leaves from two to four hours in favor of the evening paper of the Paeifi ast over those of the middle west and Atlantic states. In a financial way, nine-tenths of the money makers of the journalistic world are evening papers, not only in cities of the east, hut in towns of hotli east and west. In Oregon a number of the towns have both evening and morning papers. In every instance, the evening paper is the money maker of the two, only one or two of the morn ing papers making expenses. Some old established morning newspaper, like the New York Herald, the Chicago Tribune, the Portland Orogo nian, the San Erancisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times, are big money makers, but newly established morn ing dailies are profitable in but few instances. Hearst has never made his eastern morning newspapers pay, though his evening papers are big money makers. Every city with one successful morning paper, has two or throe successful evening papers, and some of tliem, such as the Chicago News anil Kansas City Star, are the money mak ing marvels of the country. Tin; advantages in a news way to coast afternoon papers is set forth by the Sacramento Bee as follows: "The two hours difference in time bet ween Sacramento and Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit and St. Paul makes it possible for the afternoon newspaper of this coast to cover the events of these ureal cities two hours later than the newspapers published in them. "Dot ween Sacramento and that section east of the Al legheny mountains New Washington, Dallimore the dil Icrenee is one hour great er, so that the eoasl; afternoon paper can cover up to (i o'clock every day news events of interest in this great sec tion. "After noon newspaper readers of the Pacific coasi may receive every day all news of interest in that great section east of Denver virtually two to three hours before it happens in point of time. "Hut so much for the news of the United States. Lei us see what, advantages the afternoon newspaper of this coast enjoys over newspapers published elsewhere. At !! p. in. coast t ime the day is done and the evening perform ances at the theaters are over in Loudon, Paris and Ma drid ; it is midnight at Deri in, St. Petersburg, Vienna, Home and Constantinople; another day is just dawning in Manila, Hongkong, Pekin, Tokio, Melbourne and Sydney. In the matter of news of the outside world then the coast afternoon newspaper is able to handle exclusively all that takes place between noon and midnight in all of Europe. The morning coast paper must follow with an elaboration of these events. "Afternoon papers published the first news of the as sassination of President MoKinlcy, the Slocuni disaster, the explosion on the lieiiningtoii, the fall of Port Arthur, the lro(iiois theater fire, the death of Pope Leo XIII, the death of (ucen Victoria, the death of President Cleveland and numbers id' other historical events. " By the way, news of the fleet on its cruise around the world furnishes an example of what this difference of time means to newspaper readers of the Pacific coast." .l.V VSCM.LF.It FOU ISSVLT. "The man who is in business and doesn't advertise is like the man who fell down a well and wouldn't shout. No body knows w here you are and what you are doing." This dirty, uncalled for and wanton insult to business men of Medford appears in double column bold black type in the Sunday Morning Mail. It is unuestionably the rank est attempt at bulldozing ever put up at our merchants. It says to the merchants of Medford who do not advertise in that sheet t lint they have fallen into a hole and haven't sense enough to get out. and that nobody knows about them. It is an attack upon the character, reputation and sta bility of business men. As no one can live in a well, the presumption is that they are dead and buried, for it ex pressly stall's that nobody knows where they are or what they are doing. But why should they shout f The Morning Mail wouldn't print it, for the Mail doesn't print news unless n is paid lor mat doesn t Happen as tne editors want it to. And if it did print it. the. public still wouldn't know it, for so few see the Mail. Because the Morning Mail is not making a crowning success financially and the whirligig of events is shaping to write "iiuit" on the wall, is no reason whv the Mail in its death throes should insult you because you did not see fit to give it the support which the publisher might con sider you could have given him. Advertising, like all oth er, invest mcn(, is n matter of business, but in the Mail it is a speculation, not an investment. at. ..j.OO York, Philadelphia, Uosloii, I : What Papers Say :j THE OREGON SENATOESHIP.
