INTO CHEMIST'
i:W YORK, August Thomas A. j
Edison has begun to (gratify an ambi- !
lion he has cherished many years, and
the laboratory at hlewelly, X. J., will
ee comparatively little of him hence- :
forth. Mr. IMin'tt ambition has been
to give himself a roving commission
into pure science and to steer clear of ,
commercialism. He does not want to !
increase his fortune, lie has got -V
t)t,n,(ini, which he thinks is more than
enough. All of his life he has been j
turning nut money making inventions.)
He will devote his remaining years to I
investigating anything that striken his j
fancy, without n-gard to its financial ;
proifuct iveaefn. It is learned thet the ,
man who has achieved so many marvel (
in electric it v has a greater love for I
chemistry than electricity.

WASHINGTON, August H, In the
digging of t he Panama canal it has
always been considered that, outside
the construction of the big lock and
dam works, the chief difficulty to be
encountered is the great cut through
the backbone of the American con
tinent at Culebra. The problem was
there presented of removing a mountain
and by the aid of modern steam shovels,
drills and dynamite the solution is
being worked out. In fact, according
to information wind) lias readied trie
offices of the Isthmian cimal com
mission here, over one-half of t In
work has now been completed.
This cut through the hills and the
mountains extends a distance of nine
and one half miles. At the highest
point the original Miirl'a f the
ground was 2Mt feet, and a hole from
I'M to 1,(100 feet, wide and Hi" feet
deep is being dug there. The work
involved the excavation of HD.ilitS.iMS
cubic yards of enMh and stone. The
old Kreiirh company took out l-,'!r,ii,-nnll
cubic yards between 1HI and I!-;
the new French company took out ID,
mi i i,i inn cubic yards from l!!.'. to H.-I,
anil since (he Americans have taken
charge of the work they have excavated
!H,-l4.',4-(i cubic yards. This leaves
only ;ti i, 1 1. 'i cubic yards yet to be
removed, less than half of the total.
In view of the fact that ll,l!H,SS
yards were taken out last year after
the Americans had got their machin
ery in operation and their organiza
tion perfected, tin1 indications are that
at the name rate of progress the Cu
lebra cut will be completed in three
years and a half.
I n t lie opinion of t he engineers
here that will fix the date for the
completion of the entire canal in
other words, they think thai (lie work
on Die oilier sedioiiH will be so limed
as to be finished at the moment when
t he exca vat ion is done. If hey are
correct in this, the Panama canal
nhoiild be open for business in .tan
uarv. 1!1PJ.
