BUSINESS FOLLOWS THE TROLLEY.
Some opposition is expressed to granting a tmniixm
for a " ollcy line on Seven,!, street because it ,s the city

An interurban trolley line will do more to develop me

here, except an abundance of pure water. It will do more
to upbuild Medford and make it the hub of the valley than
any one thing, and it is hoped thai 1 lit would-be investors

NEW SKW Kit SYSTEM SEEDED.
Medford's growth and development have been so rapid
that the city government is well nigh submerged by the
flood of demands for nublic improvement. The city is in
the transition period, when the makeshifts of the village
are giving way to the permanent conveniences of the city,
and all are coming at. once.
A new east iron water disl ribut ing system has just been
finished at a cost of .ffi'i.OOO, and connections must be
made hy every resident with the new pipes. Bonds have
been voted and bids asked lo construct a gravity water sys
tem to bring pure mountain water in abundance to the
city at a cost of sfiflS.OOO. Over a mile of bitnlithic pavement
is being laid on the main business street and six miles of
macadamized Bt reels are to be built this season. Every
where cement walks are being laid, handsome residences
erected, brick busianess blocks under way and schools be
ing constructed and extension and expansion (lie order of
the day. . i Jill
lint as much needed as any single improvement, more
than a garbage incinerator, more even than paved streets,
is a good Hewer system. A new trunk line, with numerous
laterals, is needed anil needed badly. I'Yoni a dozen local
ities comes tlie demand lor extension lar Iteyond llie capac
ity of the present system, rendering necessary a new system
if construction is to continue and the city remain healthy.
No one wants to build a fine residence, or in fact a res
idence of any kind, without sewer connections. So in the
flood of public improvements, the urgent need of sewer ex
tension must not lie lost sight of in this, the metropolis of
Southern Oregon.

Air. Brvan 's two defeats for the pres

in the past that his extraordinary suc
cess iu achieving supremacy within his
own party has not boen suf ficionlly rec

tvitlioiit a parallel, at least since the
days of Clay, Successive defeats for
office are usually fatal to political lead

regaining his present mastery of the

belief nfter the presidential election of

was ended, and (lie belief was solidly
founded upon tho precedents of Amer

from the universities of tho laud, with

has this week so dominated the national
oiiveutiou of one of the groat historic
pnrtics that from one end of the land

How this has been nccomplished will
invito the attention of the historians of
our present era. They will agree.
