Advertising for bids will cer tainly bring out any opposition Ihere is, and if the opposi tion is not forthcoming, a water supply of some sort is as sured within a year. The Tribune does not think that the heavy properly owners have taken sufficient interest in this question, but they must wake up now, or it will be too late. The majority of residents are so anxious for water that they will jump at anything. Tim Tribune has frequently expressed its views in favor of publicity on the water quest ion. Many have deliberately chosen to misconstrue these appeals to let the public know what was transpiring into personal attacks upon the wa ter committee. There was and is nothing personal in them. The Tribune believes that more harm has been done and is being done the water project by the policy of secrecy than could hi; accomplished in any other way. What if the policy does save the city a little money in the way of rights-of-way, etc? It cannot save much. The law per mits condemnation by municipalities to prevent grasping individuals from holding up the people. The water committee now asks for bids for a pipeline from the city to Wasson canyon or the north fork of tin I little Butto. There may be some special object in keeping the source selected secret, announcement of which might damage the pending deals, which, of course, would justil the committee. Those who are not in on the deal can only sunnisi which source has been selected, bill the fact that Wasson canyon has only 170 inches flowing today, long before low water mark is reached, would to a layman put it out of the running, especially when the rights to the required quantity and quality can be obtained for $10,000 less nioiiev from the north lork ol the Little Butte from the Fish Lake Ditch company. The Trihunejielieves that the water committee, acting upon the advice of its engineer, will decide the problem correctly, and it hopes the public will be taken into its con fidence at as early a date as possible to end the uncertain) v and doubt beclouding the issue. The Tribune has no per sonal interest in any of the propositions and no choice, as long as the city gets the best of it. To the Editor: la nnswer to u recent editoriul In the Medford Mail eondcnininp, social ism und sociiilists, it is stniugu how iiiuelt Nonio people know, espeeially about a subject on which they are en tirely in the twilight. I will not any of that editorial that it meana to be wrong;, but I will say it betrays titter iguoruuee of tbe teachings of social ism, and tho editor does not compre hend the subject he means to talk about. When the author of that editorial has studied the ctbice uf socialism from within its teaching, then and not until theu will be be fitted to discuss it be fore an intelligent public. It ia no ,'hild 's play or Mother Oonso rhyme, but vast und deep bone of the grnndest minds that our world has yet produced. Let us see what the dictionmy of the Knglish lano;tiuje has to sai about it: Dictionary Definition '. "Scientific socintisui is mi eeouomic iheory which affirms thai the material from which labor produces wealth should be tbo property of the commu nity, not of individuals forming a sep arate class. "Second Alt Ideal state of society ill which the functions of the govern ment will include the organization of all the inditstri.-a of the country. So cialist ideas are hold by many persons in the rnited States nml are rapidly gaining strength in this country." The editorial says: "The century we have just entered has been marked by conditions in human life much better than the nvernge man ever enjoyed be fore," to which he adds "let well enough alone," Hut are conditions well enough T What, with four millions try ing to get employment, he exhorta to he content. Handmaiden of Progress. The editor grills the discontent of the socialist. So (li.l the dominant class I he Christ when he drove the exploit ers from the temple. Do you not know Hint discontent with its sister attribute, imagination huve always been the hand maids of progress!
