Mr. Chadhand, UioiikIi it reads like it. It is from the Medford Mail. There are other hypocrites hesides those in Dickens. The voice from the mourners' hencli comes from one who has trod the primrose path from slot machines and eard games in saloons to the immunity hath to head off a visit to McNeil's island, and now, like the Pharisee, he lifts his hands to high heaven and thanks Cod that he is not like other men. Putting the lid on gamMing sometimes removes teuip , tation and keeps one on "the path of decency" even though there is no regard for the truth, and the stolen ideas of others are palmed off as original, as shown in the deadly parallel. Since when have immunity hat lis and "divine grace" become synonymous terms? Honesty, truth, divine grace what right has one whose policy veers at the sign of a dollar like a weather vane in the wind, to prate of such things and to strut in morality like a peacock on parade f A "TAIXT1W" IWITOKIAL. The Medford Mail contains an editorial commenting upon the news printed in The Trihune regarding the re call petition against Councilman ( dwell in which the as sertion that prohibitionists were back of the movement is pronounced false and "tainted" news. Despite the Mail's assertion, the effort to remove Mr. Olwell originated with prohibitionists, ,-md the action was taken because Mr. Olwell voted to keep the Hotel Nash in operation. This and this only, is the reason Mr. Olwcll's unfitness for the position has suddenly been discovered. When Mr. Olwell voted to renew the hotel license, Coun cilman -Wortnum, prohibition, leader, challenged his vole and the effort to remove Mr. ( dwell began at once, in order to give the prohibitionists control of the council. The effort to remove Mr. Olwell is deplorable and will be futile. It is another instance of that petty spite that seems to have run riot among the l.iliputians of Medford. Mr. Olwell has never failed to do anything that was re quested of him as a councilman, and the First ward has not suffered, lie is in every way a representative, wor thy and public-spirited citizen, one of the city's best boost ers, and has done far more to upbuild the city than those who are seeking his removal. If the people of the First ward bad wanted another councilman in place of Mr. Olwell, they could have had one last winter at the city election, but no effort was made. He was willing to resign, but was requested to continue, and it was not until Mr. Olwell voted to renew the Hotel Nash license that the effort to oust, him was attempted. The best comment on the Mail's course is to apply the following from its own editorial: "It absolutely disre garded the truth, was semi conscious of the fact that it was lying, but its torpid mind did not realize that its disregard for the truth would be so evident." WANTS A SIMULACIWK IN SKNATK. The Portland Oregonian, which has been denouncing popular election of senators and Statement No. 1 and de muuding a return to old conditions, describes the result of these conditions in New York in an editorial as follows: "It is pitiable to think how little weight, with all its brains and all its money, New York has in the affairs of the country. In the senate, for example, I hat imperial commonwealth is represented by two ghastly specters. One of them, Depew, is clothed with the tattered remnants ol' a reputation for amusing folly, but he never had the slight est vestige of the qualifications of a statesman. Now the country knows that it was in a measure a shield for dis honesty. Poor old Depew is bad enough as the representa tive of New York, but Piatt is worse. This All Hallowe'en summer, this latter spring, would make another I'alstaff very weJI if he had Falslaff's wit or his manhood. Put Piatt has neither. Not without ability of a disreputable kind at one time, he now totters about, the mere simulacrum of a man able only to cling to his dollars and devise new schemes for adding to them. Nm-li is the representation of New York in the I'nited Slates senate, and yet that state presumes to give lessons to her sister comnioiiwealths upon political respectability." This is the condition in nearly every state where cor porations control through representative government and it m the condition which caused the popular revolt in Oregon, atuV the adoption of Statement No. 1. It is to put Oregon w , , csh of N',.w York, to put Piatt's and De pe.WR n, Uie senate from tt,e state that the Oregonian is opposing popular election of senators Only the day before Uiih i clitorial description (lf , ...... me, e m acrun, ... n ,,mu " u Oxonian quoted as uiougn uie smiuiaenre was an oracle ol wisdom. hnt Hie Incident bapptatd recently.
