SANK VISCHIMINATION flY COUNCIL.
")! wad sonic power the gil'tie gie us,
To see otirsels as ithcrs sec us."
Certain of Med ford's city fathers ly their action Tues
day night again offered convincing proof that living in
small towns makes people small--hut. perhaps some people
are so small hy nature I hat environment couldn't shorten
them any.
Presumably to gratify petty personal spile for there
is no other logical reason certain coiincilmen voted last
night to put the Hotel Nash out of lusiness---for that is
the. result that refusing n liquor license would have, for no
first-class lintel either in Med ford or any other small city
can he profitably operated without a liar. To take a win
liquor licenses would 1'orco both the Nash and the Moor
into the lodging house class. This fact was reeognizei
when the council broke its former rule and granted a li
cense on the West Side to the Hotel Moore.
The Hotel Nash, as at present conducted, is a first-class
hostelry. It is one of the best hotels in Oregon south of
Portland, a credit to the city, and a constant, advertise
incut. It, lias done a great deal to attract desirable pur
chasers of propcry to this section by making them coin
fortable during their preliminary visits and creating a fa
vorable impression of the city by providing a uiiinoda-
tions seldom found in a small town. The Nash bar is one
of the most orderly bars in the city, and no complaints have
been filed against it. Its patronage1 consists nearly alto
gether of local business men and hotel guests.
When the Hotel Nash license came up in the council.
Messrs. Merrick, Trowbridge' and Wortman voted against
it. Mr. Treiwbridge has voteel in favor id' eve'ry liquor
license granted every saloon since he became' a councilman.
Mr. Merrick has voted in favor ef every license granted
sa Hons excel), that, trraiited to I". . ascliau. Alcssrs.
Merrick, Trowbridge' and Wortman were recently party to
a council e'einibine that held up a saloon license to club the
mayor into appointing a chief of police at their dictation,
and when they se'curi'd what I hey wante-d, they all three
veiled to change the ordinance limiting the number of sa
loons, iniTcasing it to one' for every I'OO inhabitants, instead
of one to every f00 inhabitants as formerly, thus permit
ting the1 establishment eif still more' saloons.
Since the' .June' ele'etion, both Messrs. Me-rrick and
Trowbridge' vote'd to re'ne'w lice-nsi's to the' Hotel Moore
and two either saloons. Within a month now they vote'
to refuse the renewal eif the' license to the Hotel Nash. Is
this not discrimiuat ion '(
The claim cuimeit be logically made for either Mr. Mer
rick, Mr. Trowbridge' or Mr. Wortman that they voted
against the Nash license be'cansi' of the result of the' dune'
elee-timi, for Med fore I veiteel wet, anel these genlleine'ii are
supposel to be representing Mi'dford, and not Ashland and
the' farmers eif the county, who pay no taxes hi'ri', in the
couni'il. Furthermore", if these ge'iit lenii'ii are- represent
ing the citizens of Ashland and the farnie'rs of Jackson
county in Mi'dford's city e'ouncil, why have two of them
veiled to grant license's to three' saloons since' the dune- ele'e
tion? Since the present council look the' re'ins of ol'fici' last
January there have' be'e'ii ten liiior lice-nse's issued. In
February licenses we're- grant.e'd W. M. Kennedy, .lohn
Harrington and II. O. Wilkinson. Messrs. Wortman,
Merrick anil Trowbrielge voted in favor of thesi' license's.
On February 'Jfi a license was voted to 1'. W. Waschau,
Messrs. Wortman and Merrick voting against it on the
grounds that the number of saloons prov ided for by ordi
nance was exceeded.
On April 11! J an ordinance' was passe'd amending ordi
nance's 1'JT and KtO, which limited saloons to one to every
500 inhabitants, so that the nuinlicr of saloons could be
increasi'el to one' for eve-ry 1UM) inhabitants. The' council
minutes show thai Messrs. Wortman, Me-rrick and Trow
bridge; veiteel for incre-asiug the- number of saloons. This
men-use in saloons was the result of a council combine
against the mayor upon the- question of chief police, and
re'sulteul in the issuance of a license' to Hass and Hale on the
same; elay. Their license' had hern held up, and the' place
dosed, while' the' e'ouncil and mayor fought it out. Me-r-rie'k
and Treiwbridge vote'd lor Ibis lice-use". Weirtman
whoa lew minutes before had vote-d to increase the' numbi'i'
of thirst resorts, showed his consistency by voting against
thet license. Since then he' has vote'd against every license'
issued.
May f a license was grante-d Murphv it Downing; June
li licenses were1 given Veiling & Hall and O. M. Selsbv, and
dune !' euie to the Jlotel JWoore. I lu-se lour licenses Mer-
rick and Trowbridge' veile-d for. On July 7 they vote'
against enie- for the Hotel Nash.
At the same- meeting where-, without batting an eye',
these' coimc ilmen vote away .f IS, ''"( as commission on the
sale of bonds, Mr. Wortman proves himself the watchman
eif the city treasury by moving to disallow a bill for e-levcn
elays at .sfc! a day forau assistant to the overworked iccord-e-r,
whose aet ion in hiring the helper had already he-en sanc
tioned, iin.l Mr. Tviiwhridge niatii tests his giiardianship
ed the city s interest tiv moving to disallow the hill for lin
oleum em the e-ity hall floor, pivsnnml.ly thinking that any
thing but uiarn floeir is too great u luxury.
